Headphones and speakers play simultaneously

HI,

I've just got a new laptop and some CM Storm headphone (with detachable mic) and the headphones work fine but I can't work out how to get sound to only play through the headphones rather than both the headphones and the speakers?! I've looked on a few forums and people say I need to set the headphones as the default device- which I guessed I would need to do however the laptop hasn't registered that I've plugged headphones in (even though sound plays through them).

Hope that makes sense and someone can help me!! :(

Are the headphones USB or audio jack?

You might be able to manually 'mute' the speakers on the laptop (although that shouldn't be required).

they're audio jack, I've tried muting the speakers but then it doesn't play through the headphones

They definitely plugged in fully? I know my work laptop doesn't mute the laptop speakers until the headphones are fully pushed in so to speak.

Have a look in audio control panel and see if you have an option to "Automatically enable headphone settings" and/or "Automatically mute speakers"

Hi,
I received my new laptop and experience the same problem as you Sophie.
When i plugg my headphone (regular audio jack) i can see the message "You just plugged a device into the audio jack" and then i can hear the sound from both headphone and speaker....
Have you found a solution yet?

im using :
windows 7 pro
Sound Card Intel 5.1 Channel High Definition Audio + SPDIF/MIC/Headphone Jack

hello.

I had same issue and re-installed the Realtek drivers and it fixed the problem. I'm using Win8.1 and the driver I used was 01_BT_Realtek_Optional_W81.zip (16-04-2014 | 60.83mb) - if you're using Win7 it may be called something else but should have a similar name

Arrf, after unsuccessfully tried to uptade the driver (it said that they were up to date) i uninstalled them and i've install other that i had downloaded, but nothing change, still the same problem :( i bet i've dowloaded the last version, the same that was allready installed)

Should I try an older driver version, and if yes, where to find it?

I used "Drivers Realtek High Definition Audio pour Vista/7/8/8.1"
File Downloaded : Win7_Win8_Win81_R273.exe

did you download the driver from the PC Specialist website? if you log in and then look at the left hand side of the main screen there's a 'tech support' box with a download option. Go into there and all the drivers for your machine will be listed. When i re-installed the Realtek drivers it automatically un-installed the current one and added the new one.

There's another thread on here (search 'headphones' and you'll find it) that mentions about changing the audio settings on your laptop - i did that as well but i still had the issue until i re-installed the drivers. You might need to do both so maybe worth having a search for that as well. Good luck
