Help me please

Hi guys.
First of all sorry for my English.

I have a little doubt about the choice between two notebooks, and i hope to resolve it with your help.

My doubt is which of these two models to buy: "15,6 DEFIANCE VII" or "15,6 VYPER III".

I'm looking to build a laptop to studying and gaming.
- What i mean for studying: Programs such as Microsoft Teams, Office/Adobe PDF Reader or videos on Youtube (i sometimes open them all together, or at least almost all of them).
- What i mean for gaming: Recent games such as GTA 5, Fortnite, PUBG, etc.. without necessarily requiring ultra graphics power. I don't play competitively but i still care about good performance (medium-high / high).

The build that i went to choose is exactly the same for both models:
Defiance: here
Vyper: here

The total price is exactly the same, i.e. € 1,620.00 (my budget is maximum €1600/1650).

The only difference between the two models is the GPU.
The DEFIANCE model has: RTX 2070 MAX-Q
The VYPER model has: RTX 2070

So, in conclusion, what are the main differences between the two models? What "manages" the heat best? Which is the most resistant?
I also want to clarify that i want to keep this notebook for several years, so i don't want to be forced to change it after only 1-2 years.

Many thanks in advance. :)

Hello mate,

I saw your PM but thought I would reply here as other people on the forum might have better suggestions than me.

First of all would you save both laptops as a quote and then click on the post to forum button. This will give you a PC spec for each and a URL which you can copy and paste into the forum so that we can see your full specification. We can then use the URL's to make changes and offer you suggestions.

A quick follow up.

I took the liberty of building a laptop suggestion in the configurator and tried to post it here and it would appear the Italian website doesn't let you. Hopefully one of the moderators will appear momentarily and point out how to do it.

In the meantime this is what I would recommend for you:

So the reason I went with the Vyper over the Defiance is you stated you wanted the laptop to last as long as possible and its for gaming. The RTX 2070 Max-Q is not on par with the RTX 2070 in fact it is probably more comparable to the 2060. This means straight away you are limiting the life span of the laptop for the same money.

I made 2 main changes for your build. Firstly I reduced your RAM to 16GB. If you only want to use standard office applications as you indicated and game then 16GB is more than enough.

I also changed your storage configuration.

I switched from Intel because for a start the value for money is not great compared to the storage size and secondly there are quite serious questions surrounding the durability of those drives.

I put in a 512GB PCS M.2 for your OS, files and office applications and then a 1TB SSD for your games. This will reduced the read/write to the OS drive which in turn will prolong the drives life and keep your laptop running optimally.

Now you may not want that much storage? If not this can be changed.

Finally you asked about thermals. Honestly I have no experience with the Defiance however with a 2070 Max-Q because it is a lower Watt card it will create less heat there for it should run pretty cool.

I own a 17" Vyper with the full size 2070 and AAA games run impressively cool for such a thin laptop. I average around 80C GPU and 85 CPU which is obviously game dependant.

Haha no worries mate see my last post I pre-empted you.

Haha no worries mate see my last post I pre-empted you.
Aahah sorry, i hadn't seen it.

Anyway, about SSD:
I followed your advice and i will change my specs like this:

1st M.2 SSD Drive
250GB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 2300MB/W)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
512GB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (2000 MB/R, 1100 MB/W)

The first SSD will be used for the OS (Windows 10) and the second SSD will be used for programs and games.
What do you think about it? It could go well? Do you think 250 GB is enough for OS? (1TB is too much space for games for me)

About RAM:
I decided to set it to 32GB because i'll be working with virtual machines in the future.

About GPU:
I'll still follow your advice, focusing on 2070.
A little question about it. Is the RTX 2070 the mobile version, right? (Vyper model)

Finally about the heat management, i asked that question because many of my friends had overheating problems.
For example, i'm worried about thermal throttling.
So i would like to figure out which notebook handles heat best.

Thanks.

Storage: So your drive selection will work, 256GB is plenty to run Windows on and it gives you plenty of headroom for updates and the like.

The 970 EVO is an exceptionally fast drive and you pay for it. It would be more economical to have another 512GB instead which is a slower drive but I have used them in the last two laptops I have owned and they are plenty fast enough.

Do you have a reason for wanting such a fast drive?

I appreciate 1TB is too much for you but again thinking to the future and how comparatively cheap storage is I would be seriously considering putting in more storage than you need now?

What games are you planning on playing?

RAM: 32GB of RAM potentially is a good move if you are using VM's but it really depends what you are doing with those VM's and how many you are running at once?

For example if you are creating a fully realised virtual CISCO network using GNS3 with clients, firewalls, routers and switches then yes you probably want 32GB of RAM. However in this case I would suggest don't bother doing it that on a laptop any way as the CPU is going to be your bottleneck due to thermal limitations.

If you are just running a couple of VM's with different instances of say Linux, depending on the use case 32GB may be overkill.

However if you are running a VM MySQL server 32GB could be a good idea?

GPU: It is the other way round the Max-Q is the "mobile" version of the card and the 2070 is the full fat version which is why it's more powerful.

Thermals: I cannot speak for the Defiance as I haven't owned the latest model however I have not seen any horror stories about them on this forum.

I own the Vyper 17" and it handles thermals extremely well as I previously wrote. It will thermal throttle on occasion just like any gaming laptop, however it throttles far less than any laptop I have ever owned. The 15" version uses the exact same cooling solution as the larger version so I would expect to see very similar thermals.

The average CPU, GPU temps I put in my previous post are well within spec for the hardware and are considered normal operating temperatures.
