Hello guys,
Am a university student studying interior design.
am planning to configure a desktop for doing my study. But am not an expert for doing that, anyone in the forum can be so kind to give me some advices or help me configure a good running one.

the most daily used softwares are: autodesk CAD , SketchUp, Photoshop,Autodesk Revit, Lumion....
I got the mouse and keyboard and windows system.
I got a monitor, but am not sure whether i can use it or not. the techspecs is the link.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/LE19R86WDX/XEU-techspecs

plan to build a
intel based system. budget is around 450-500 pounds without monitor. if the monitor can't be used, i can choose another one with more 100 pounds.

ps:more questions
is it necessary to have quad core processor/16G RAM/really good Graphics card?
is it possible to have most of them within the budget?

Thank you very much.
Robin

Hello, I just had a quick look at your software and the most demanding seem to be Revit and Lumion. With a £500 budget I'm afraid you won't be able to get the high end CPU, RAM and GPU, which would indeed be ideal for this type of work.

This spec meets the minimum requirements as far as I can tell, however some of the software you listed, such as Lumion, take advantage of powerful GPUs which means that the GTX 650 in my spec doesn't meet the min requirements for complex scenes. If you could find a way to up your budget a bit you could get a better spec. If you want to replace the GTX 650 by a more powerful one in the future you may have to get a better PSU.

This spec looks better indeed, I wouldn't go with an i3 as it is a dual core processor and you need something more powerful.

The difference between 2 disks and one disk is that if one fails you have the other one basically, or you can wipe one and keep data on the other. People usually go for a RAID setup with 2 similar HDDs. RAID1 means that everything on one disk is mirrored onto the other so that if one fails the other one still contains all the data. It's useful if you have sensitive data that you can't lose. However that also halves the capacity of your HDD.

Caviar Blacks are normally quite reliable, so in your case I would keep the 1TB drive and do some backups of your important work onto a separate HDD if you have one. You can also partition the drive so that the OS sits on a separate partition, so that if you have to reinstall windows you'll just wipe the OS partition and keep your data. It also offers some degree of protection from other partitions ie if one partition becomes corrupted generally you would be able to recover stuff on the other partitions.

If you can go up to £697 this spec would be better. The main difference is the GPU, most of the software you listed is not that demanding however Lumion is very demanding on the GPU, so I went for the HD 7850 which meets their moderately complex scenes http://lumion3d.com/forum/f-a-q/lumion-2-minimum-hardware-requirements/requirements. Again it depends on your use, will you be using Lumion a lot and creating very complex scenes?
