Help please - brand new to PC gaming - bought Tornado R3 entry level kit - rgb fans not lighting

Hi all,
I think I may be a regular visitor for a while!... bought my 13 yr old his first gaming PC - off-the-shelf from a retailer, a PC Specialist built Tornado R3.
We fired it up Christmas Day and he absolutely loves it, but I'm a graphic designer - a Mac Man I'm afraid so this is all very alien to me.
After the first 'session' the RGB fans on the front stopped lighting up - they cycled through all the colours - white, red, green, blue etc but now they don't light up at all... they are working (spinning if you like).

Is this a problem, or is there something we should have done on starting up first time?

The specs are:

Processor- AMD Ryzen 3 3200G Processor
- Quad-core
- 3.6 GHz / 4.0 GHz
- 6 MB cache
RAM- 8 GB DDR4 (2400 MHz)
- 32 GB maximum installable RAM
Graphics card- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050
- 2 GB
Storage- 1 TB HDD (7200 rpm)
- 120 GB SSD

The case is a Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-DELTA

Please help!.. whilst it's not stopping him going off into deep space (No Man's Sky looks awesome BTW).. it's lessening the experience of his first gaming PC..

Looks like we have a LOT of learning to do...

The case fans actually can connect to the motherboard and be controlled by a motherboard app.

Do you know what motherboard it is? If you look at the actual motherboard it should be stamped on it.

Then I can advise what software to install to control the lights.

NMS would be a truly, truly great game if they fixed the damn bugs.

You probably have an Asus motherboard which means you'll want Asus Aura Sync.

Similar discussion here:

though you mobo may be this one

Hi,
thanks for the quick response - the Motherboard is indeed a Prime A320M-K.... I’ve installed iCue and tried Aura but neither work - both displaying commonly reported errors:

ICue ‘no devices detected’ and Aura not work

Hope you can help

Remove iCue as it's likely causing a conflict and wouldn't work anyway as it's not a corsair mobo. Uninstall Aura also, then reboot and reinstall Aura.

Then if aura is still erroring can you take a screenshot and post it?

Hi,
we’ve uninstalled and removed iCue and Aura, then reinstalled Aura but getting the same error message.. attached screenshot of the error message and BIOS version..

Ok, so if you open up the case, trace the cable from the rear fan to the motherboard and make sure the header is inserted correctly. If possible check the same for the front fans.

Right, never had one of these open before in my life, but everything appears to fit snugly.. I re-sited the plugs that lead from the fans and they want in with a satisfying click... not sure if it helps but pics attached.. also to note - there’s a very brief flash from the led’s on startup..

I’m really sorry, but can’t help further, just can’t work out how the LED power is delivered. I think I’ve taken a serious intelligence hit over the Christmas break! Too much food!

I’d give PCS a call first thing in the morning, they’re open from 9am to 8pm I think, although it may be 8am.

Looking at this more closely, I think the A320-K doesn't support RGB lighting / Aura Sync.

The product page on the Asus site says nothing about it:

And the system isn't advertised as RGB, unlike the Tornado 5, which is, on the PC World website

And, if you try to order an RGB LED strip with the A320-K in the configurator:

It says it's not compatible.

So no RGB via the motherboard.

Perhaps you could still get RGb by installing a controller like a Node or something. But that's probably cash that could have been invested instead into the core hardware.

No probs - thanks for looking at my problem anyway... know what you mean about the food!...enjoy your New Year

Hi there,
don’t think my boy is too bothered about controlling/programming the LED’s - when we first booted the machine he was happy when it just cycled through the different colours... but now there’s nothing, the fans are dark.

To be honest if we could just get them to light up any colour we’d be happy. As far as the gaming experience goes he’s already super happy and eyeing up the next step in upgrading his system!

Sooo much for us to learn!..

...one more thing - the RGB fans come with the Corsair Delta-Spec case... so any idea why iCue wouldn’t see them?
Yes. There's no way for the PC to understand that there are controllable RGB fans in it. The motherboard has no RGB header, and there is no separate controller unit as a part of the system. As far as I can tell, anyway.

What sorts or upgrades is your son thinking of, and on what sort of timescales?

The rule of thumb is that if you buy a PC and immediately want to upgrade it, you bought the wrong PC. PCs can be upgraded, and should be upgraded after a while. i.e. once there is new hardware on the market. And after you have used the old parts about as much as you can. Upgrading too soon just means you are replacing existing parts with others that were already on sale at the time you bought the system. That leaves you effectively paying twice for components, and getting far worse bang for buck than if you'd just bought those outright.

Keep the PC as it is for a while, and only consider upgrading down the line.

At least wait half a year for AMD's Zen 3 and Nvidia/AMD's next gen GPUs to be out :)

Just thought I'd let you know - I spoke with a really helpful guy at PC Specialist and with the help of some photos and digging around in the PC I found out the mobo doesn't have RGB headers. So, after hours and hours of chasing the wrong solution (lesson learned) I rooted around in the case where the cables were tidied and found a little module with 'RGB Controller RF Remote Wireless Controller DC12V' printed on it. Turns out the Welcome Pack was missing a remote controller for the LED fans... PCS have sent one out to me immediately.
The funny thing is within an hour of my call, my son shouted down to me "the LED's have just come on!.." I'd put some LED strip lighting (from B&Q) around his gaming station a few months - he just happened to be in a different part of his room when he switched them on and the remote for the strip lights switched on the fan LED's!... so now, if he get's in the right place he can switch on and set the colours on both sets of LED's simultaneously!... we've gone from no control to synchronised lighting completely by accident!.. thanks for your responses.. (no upgrades on the horizon now, we're planning to save and replace the whole PC when we've got enough to do so.. in the meantime he's back fully enjoying his new gaming PC)
