Help with a new built. Please!

Hi everyone. Please help!

I am trying to build my second custom pc. I have found myself facing a problem when it comes to the case. I am trying to add a Blu Ray writer, but none of the cases I can see available seems to support one. I would be obliged if you could please let me know whether there is a case I can choose that does support this option. The new case needs to be able to accommodate for the power supply (I went for a 100w one, but might upgrade to a 1200W).

The second question I have is about the number of USB ports my built. As I understand it, I am going to be getting the ports that come with the case (depending on which one I end up with, of course) as a minimum, plus the ones my motherboard provides. In my case, according to the description on the website my motherboard should offer 8 in total (1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port Type-C®, 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports Type-A, 3 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports Type-A, 2 x USB 2.0 ports Type-A) is that right? Then I have added a pci E USB card which adds another 2 ports. Am I right in thinking I will get 10 USB ports in total from my motherboard, plus the ones on my case?

Finally, I would be obliged if you could please advise me on whether I have over/under engineered the built. Have I added things that I did not need to, either because other components cover these functions or perhaps I have left useful elements out? I am trying to create a value for money system that is powerful but not wasteful.

The computer will be used for moderate gaming, work and entertainment but I was hoping to future proof as much as possible without breaking the bank. As it stands the built comes to £2,223, but I was hoping that with your advice and help I could reduce this without compromising much.

The monitor I am using is DELL S2721QS

Many thanks for your help.

Here is what I came up with:

I just read some other threads and people recommend AMD builds. I am more than happy to go for that, if it means I am getting a decent built for similar or less money! So I changed the CPU and motherboard. Everything else remains the same. Price £2,378, but I chose the most expensive CPU and motherboard. Maybe I can save some more if I change these two to something cheaper without compromising much. I am open to suggestions!

Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D 16 Core CPU (4.2GHz-5.7GHz/144MB w/3D V-CACHE/AM5) 

Motherboard
ASUS® ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO (AM5, DDR5, PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 6E)

RAM
32GB PCS PRO DDR5 4800MHz (2 x 16GB)

GPU
12GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4070 - HDMI, DP, LHR

1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 6500MB/sW)

1st Storage Drive
4TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 5400RPM, 256MB CACHE

DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
16x BLU-RAY WRITER DRIVE, 16x DVD ±R/±RW & SOFTWARE

Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ - MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET

Processor Cooling
PCS FrostFlow 200 Series High Performance CPU Cooler (250W TDP)

Thermal Paste

Extra Case Fans (these are dependant on the case, this element might change)
2 x 120mm PCS Black Case Fan

Sound Card

I should also add that I am not looking to build a pc and keep upgrading it. What I would like to do is build a system that will work for me for 5+ years as is. For comparison, this system bellow lasted me 12 years. It is still doing OK, but it is rather tired by now, and I am losing confidence on some components. For example my GPU crashes now randomly every time I play World of Tanks, for example.

Here is my old system for comparison:

InWIN MANA-136 BLACK GAMING CASE
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-3820 (3.6GHz) 10MB Cache
ASUS® SABERTOOTH X79: SOCKET 2011, R.O.G
16GB KINGSTON HYPERX GENESIS QUAD-DDR3 1600MHz X.M.P(4 x 4GB KIT)
2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 670 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
120GB INTEL® 330 SERIES SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 500MB/sR | 450MB/sW)
2TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD2002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)
12x BLU-RAY RE-WRITER DRIVE, 16x DVD ±R/±RW
CORSAIR 850W ENTHUSIAST SERIES™ TX850 V2-80 PLUS® BRONZE
INTEL CERTIFIED LIQUID CPU COOLER FOR SOCKET LG2011
ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO
WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps PCI-E CARD

Many thanks again!

Hi there,

Can you share the links for the builds you have proposed? I'm thinking AMD is definitely the way to go but I'm not convinced that the 7950X3D is the right fit for you. The 7800X3D is very powerful even with half the cores and I think it fits your needs more.

With regards to the case/Blu-ray drive. Manufactures are moving away from optical media now, in fact the world is. With that being said I completely understand that people still want to use it. I think the best compromise is an external USB3.0 Blu-ray burner. Would this be acceptable to you? If not, the case options are very limited and tend not to be particularly aesthetic.

sck451

MOST VALUED CONTRIBUTOR
Aesthetic, 5.25" bay, fairly large, good airflow: you want the Fractal Pop XL Air with "send in my own case". It's a great case with so many features.

Thanks for your answer. I am not quite sure how to save the links to the builds. I am more than happy with your suggestion on the processor. I suspect it will also save me sine money. With regards to an external blue ray, I am not extremely happy with it, but will consider if it is the only sensible solution...

So, here is the AMD built: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am5-pc/KZTF9cRQeP/

As Scott mentioned, maybe my processor is an overkill. I am happy to read suggestions on alternatives.

I have chosen an Nvidia GPU
. If an AMD card will work equally well I am happy to consider. I know about ray tracing, it is nice to have, but if going for an AMD saves me a ton of money and all I lose is performance on ray tracing then I might be OK with it.

I have added the Blu Ray writer and 'send your own case' as an option. I am once again happy to read suggestions on possible options.

I do not use the writer/drive on a daily basis, so maybe an external is fine. Similarly, the case sck451 mentioned on Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pop-Air-Black-Clear-Tint/dp/B08T1VC921) does not look like it has support for optical media. Am I not seeing it?

Many thanks for all the help. It really is amazing...

It mentions the 5.25 bays in the “a hidden compartment” section of the description
It’s not that clear on Amazon, if you look on the fractal site it’s a bit better

But basically the bottom part of the front under the fans that looks solid, that slides out to reveal the optical drives and has a drawer too, quite a nice solution

Wow, thanks a lot. indeed. That's a great solution. My concern is that buying this case and then sending it in will increase the cost. The external blue ray writers also seem slower than the integrated ones. Not sure what to do...

I asked customer support here and they offered the FRACTAL POP SILENT CASE TG (BLACK) as an option pcspecialists offer to cover optical drives. What do you think?

No, wouldn't recommend this case. It's too small and closed off. The one recommended is an airflow case.

Amazing. Thanks so much. How many USB ports do I get with this motherboard and case (I did not see which case you used)?

Scott

Behold The Ford Mondeo

2x USB C, 2x USB3.2, 4x USB2.0 giving a total of 6 Type-A and 2 Type-C on the board itself.

From what I can see the case only supports an additional 2 so you would have 8 USB type A ports and 2 USB Type-C ports.

I wouldn't bother with an addin card though. You can get a USB3 hub which will give you whatever you need. What do you think you need all the USB connections for?

Not sure. At the moment I am using them for mouse, keyboard, printer, a couple of external ha4d drives and one for my phone. Nothing too drastic. I should be ok with 8 type A and 2 type c

If you need more I would definitely look to a hub rather than a PCIe card. The only time to consider an addin card is when the throughput speed of the USB is paramount. Otherwise you're not going to need much throughput.

The likes of the mouse, keyboard & printer could all be attached to something like the below:

They are also likely to be USB2.0, rather than 3.0, although the Printer may look for more rate depending on the age. For the input devices I would just use the USB2.0 ports on the board.
