Help with Matte Screen on Optimus II

Hi,

I recently got my new laptop (17.3" Optimus II), overall I'm very happy with the machine and the service from PC Specialist was exceptional, however this is the first time I have used a "matte screen" and overall it doesn't appear anywhere near as good as the glossy screen on my 6 year old 17" Clevo D9000T. The biggest issue is that there is a distinct gradient from the top left (darkest) to bottom right (lightest) when viewing the screen head on at the normal viewing position, this is particularly bad when viewing full screen images etc. Does anyone else out there have the 17" matte screen and is this normal?

I have attached an image showing a full screen image of a totally black image in Paint.

Cheers for any replies or advice in advance :).

That doesn't look right to me. Give PCS a ring tomorrow and direct them to this thread so they can see exactly what you mean.

Let us know what they say.

Looks like the backlight to me, have you tried turning your backlight right up/right down and see if it changes at all?

Obviously give them a phone call tommrowow aswell but give it a go so you got some information for them.

All,

Ok not had chance to call PCS (thats 13 hour day shifts for ya :( ) but If I can I think a call/email tomorrow will now be necessary if I can. I checked out the model number on the display on my laptop tonight and its not a "AU Optronics B173HW01 V.5 - 17.3" Matte" as I expected but a "LG LP173WF1(TL)(B2) " which after doing some googling explains why i'm so dissapointed with the display :(. The Lg is just not up to the quality that you would expect, the AU Optronics V5 has had rave reviews and this was confusing me as mine is quite poor in my opinion. I have compared it to 3 or 4 other laptops and its not even close to the quality, its got very poor viewing angles, bad blacks and odd gradients (as previously mentioned) .

Anyone else have one of these - check hardware ID in device manager for the display, it will say LGD0283 if its the LG one. Not sure whether mine is just one of a bad batch or not.

I'm hoping I can get this replaced with the AU Optronics one as this appears to be the display I would like to of received

Rest of the laptop spot on though :)

Keith,

If you send an email, direct them to this thread. Bear in mind though that it can sometimetimes take a few days to get a reply via email, as from what I've read here, the phone takes priority. Phone if you can, but they should reply to your email otherwise (as soon as they can get off the phones and clear any emails in front of yours).

Don't forget, the phones are open on Saturday mornings too, from 9am to 1pm.

Just like to say,

10/10 for customer service again from PC Specialist team :), if only the rest of the companies in the world operated like this (I'm an ex-Kobalt Computer customer and we all know what happened there eek :( ).

I would certainly recommend PCS to anyone thinking of buying a new machine.

Quote from recent PCS support email.....

"Dear Keith Bramley

Thank you for your reply. I will get the work done tomorrow morning and hopefully get it dispatched on Monday. I have asked the admin department to refund the costs of your matte screen option.

If we can assist you any further, please do not hesitate to contact us "

Looking forward to firing it up again and finally retiring the old, but trusty, but exceeding heavy, 7 year old Clevo D900T :)

Yeah opted for a glossy screen instead, went for the Chimei InnoLux N173HGE C1 , heard some good reviews for this screen and the spec looks reasonable. Got the laptop delivered back just now (on time exactly when pcs said it would be delivered - all credit to DPD too, excellent choice of courier i think).

The screen is fanstastic, lots of colour, very bright, excellent viewing angles, no backlight bleeding, blacks are black, whites are white and not a dead pixel in sight.

To top it all off I got a refund for the original matte screen so overall I am delighted.
