HEPL! Locked User Account - Ubuntu Thunderbird Mail

I've only just taken delivery of my new PC and loaded Ubuntu 12.10.

I have set up my e-mail account in Thunderbird and somehow managed to get the account locked and it won't accept what I thought was my password to unlock it.

I've tried using the Grub Menu but that doesn't work; it won't change the password.

The message I get is:

"Authentication Token Manipulation Error" and "Password Unchanged".

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

You can reset your password if you boot into recovery mode:

Edit: sorry, I guess you have already tried that.

Things I would check:

Is / mounted as read-only (in recovery mode).
What are the permissions on /etc/shadow?

The problem was due to / mounted being read only.

Have now sorted the problem!
