High-end laptop not specifically for gaming

I'm in the market for a new, high-end laptop. Although not specifically for gaming I want to have the option of playing games such as Starcraft II, Black Ops, maybe Skyrim etc. I'm not a big gamer though so if it's not up to playing the very latest games at the very highest settings I'm not that bothered.

I currently have an HP Envy 17 with i7 Q820 CPU, Radeon 5850 and 8GB RAM and this works fine for most of my needs. However, it gets alarmingly hot, even under normal use and the battery dies literally after around 30-40mins. I travel a fair bit and even though battery-life isn't too important a couple of hours in normal use would be nice...as would something that doesn't burn a hole in my leg!

Here's a spec I was considering. Can anyone advise if this would be a considerable upgrade from what I currently have, and if there's anything there that is unnecessary as it is slightly over my preferred budget:

Hey this is quite a nice build but i would suggest going for the 1333MHZ ram becasuse the 1600MHz ram has been reported to be unstable and most people dont knowtice the difference beetween the two, also do you need the ssd?when i have time later i will find a post that shows the ssd saves you a few seconds on startup and its a huge price to pay whilst losing memory space just for a few seconds faster.also upgrade to the silver warranty for £5 the 1 month collect and return goes to 1 year collect and return :)
hope this helped :)
if im wrong about something please correct me

Also i tried building you a spec and realised you can only have one hdd on this machine or two hdds without a disk drive so your ssd/750gb hybrid with the disk drive would not work.you can either get rid of the disk drive or you could get rid of the ssd

There you go,i forgot to pick the matte option so you can change that and also if you dont need the disk drive you could swap the hdd out and have 2 500gb hybrids because there fast with alot of space

Thanks for for info..and pointing out that about the HDD!

Yeah I was wondering if the SSD would be worth it - if it only makes a few secs difference then I'll bin it and replace it with a decent HDD.

I'll downgrade the memory as you suggested too and see what happens to the price.

Any opinion about the graphics card? Will it play games like Far Cry 2, Crysis etc?

Sorry im not too good with graphics cards so you might wait for someone else to post however i do know that its not the best for gaming, the spec i reposted was about £1100 but considering you are willing to spend £1400 (or what is your budget?)maybe you could have a look at the skyfire? fits in two hdds and a disk drive i belive and has a much better graphics card for gaming?
i could have a look at doing a spec for that if you want?

SSDs are definitely worth it, it has made a massive difference in speeds, i have the same one you were going to choose, my bootup is a fraction of what my laptop was on ubuntu (which loads faster than windows with same HDDs) - its also silent and keeps very cool, programs like firefox load up instantly and games such as bf3 take a lot less time to load than my friend who has a standard caviar black (desktop drive)

for 1470 this spec would be better in every way

Chassis & Display
Vortex II: 17.3" Glossy Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2670QM (2.20GHz) 6MB - more than enough, although id stretchto the next if you can

Memory (RAM)
8GB SAMSUNG 1333MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (2 x 4GB) - plenty of RAM

Graphics Card
2GB AMD® Radeon® HD 6990M - DirectX® 11 (17.3" Vortex II) - second best card available behind the 580m

Memory - Hard Disk
120GB KINGSTON HYPERX SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 555MB/sR | 510MB/sW) - faster than the one you originally chose

2nd Hard Disk
750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD7500BPKT, SATA 3 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm) - no need for a hybrid as a second drive, these are pretty good

DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)

Memory Card Reader
Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD: Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo)

Thermal Paste
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND (£9) - definitely recommend this, considering you are having problems with your current one

Sound Card
Intel 5.1 Channel High Definition Audio + SPDIF/MIC/Headphone Jack

Bluetooth & Wireless
GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® N130 802.11N (150Mbps) + BLUETOOTH

USB Options
2 x USB 3.0 PORTS + 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS AS STANDARD

Battery
Vortex Series 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (5,200 mAh/76.96WH)

Power Lead & Adaptor
1 x UK Power Lead & 220W AC Adaptor

Operating System
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit - inc DVD & Licence (£79)

Thank again - a few things to consider it seems :)

One last question...in fact 2 questions...

How hot do these systems run? At the moment I use a cooling stand because if I don't it feels like my laptop will catch fire, but it's a pain to travel with one. Can I get away with using these setups without?

Before I stumbled across PCSpecialist I was looking at the Asus G74SX - any opinions about that one? It looks like a bit of a hefty beast and I prefer the plainer look of the ones on here.

I love SSDs but I must admit, hybrid drives aren't bad at all. The new 750GB one that PCS have started stocking has 8GB cache at SATA 6GB/s so will be very fast, I would recommend getting it. Also, don't forget, the sound card is an external device. For 1400, I would get this:

Chassis & Display
SkyFire:17.3" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2760QM (2.40GHz) 6MB

Don't forget the silver warranty and also, order fast, the skyfire chassis are running out fast! Finally, I did put an SSD/HDD combo in, this is a good combo as you have two HDD slots and the ODD slot in the Skyfire chassis.

The one PCS are stocking is the 3gb/s one, which still has 4gb not 8gb
