How do you mod games?

I have never played pc games before so I really don't know the first thing. I've heard reports of games like skyrim being transformed by mods. So if somebody could be kind enough to explain how to do this in an A to Z way I would really appreciate it or just point me towards somewhere to learn it.

Nexus mods is what I used for Skyrim. You have to pay a bit for access, but with the nexus app it will install most mods automatically and it gives you a mod manager (which is very handy when you want/need to turn mods off).

Some mods or combinations of mods will break quest lines. Avoid Civil War mods (the one I used broke the quest line irreparably), unless you can find a new one that is said to always work.

For Elder Scrolls Online you can download mods for free and you just copy them into a specific folder that the game creates.

Steam Workshop for me. Never got along very well with Nexus...just seems far too complicated when things like Workshop just "work". Even other things like Curse for WoW just work. Too much faffing with nexus (ones opinion ofc :D )

Cheers for the replies everyone. I'll look into the first one but think for a beginner maybe steam workshop might be best, really looking forward to getting the pc now. Steam had all arma games dayz and I think a whole stack of the developers back catalogue on sale yesterday so I bought it. Tried playing arma on my laptop that is useless and it was just not happening played a little bit of dayz and even though the laptop was crap the feeling I got from finding my first bag of rice was stupidly satisfying haha
