My budget is 2K and up to this is fine:

Priorities:
Not too heavy and not bigger in dimensions than this
Number crunching
Fast repetitive simulations
Viewing and manipuating 3D models
skype etc
Not much gaming

I was thinking that on one SSD I could have windows, on the other Ubuntu. I think therefore the mSATA drive is not needed.
I don't really need a lot of storage space eg for films or photos.

Any comments on my spec gratefully received, especially blunders etc

I'm new to the site myself, so I'd wait for a few more experienced members to give their opinions.

However, 24GB of RAM seems massive to me. Would you realistically ever need anything approaching that? I guess if you're really into CAD/CAM etc. that could be a reason.

I'd also have thought upgrading the GPU to the 860m would be a good idea but have you checked the requirements of the 3D software you're using? Some of them really require a workstation graphics card or if you have the knowledge you can flash a good spec card I am lead to believe.

Upgrading the wireless card to the Killer card is also recommended.

Any reason for having 2SSDs? I see that you want two OSs but you could put them on one drive...
