I depressingly doubt that even if every other online store did the same that Microsoft would ever sort themselves out..... now how can I charge people who read my emails using Outlook? :)

At this point it's not for Microsoft to sort out, they've replaced IE7 with IE8, then IE9 and soon IE10, they never go back and upgrade older versions.
It's the fact that many still people refuse to move from the older browsers when really they should do (yes, I know some of it is because companies don't want to fork out for new web sites and apps to be written because they will just not work in newer browsers, but really they should do).

MS' quirky attitude to following standards isn't entirely IE7 related though. They will (possibly need) to keep on throwing in awkward deviations from any standards.
