I'm back again - this time with a laptop spec (gaming and university work) :)

Hey, I've received amazing help from the people on these forums and I've come back but with a laptop spec. My intended purpose is gaming and university (college) work like using word, etc. The budget is flexible, but I would much rather prefer if it was under 1400.

I went for a Defiance because it is cheaper than the Vortex. I do, however, have a few questions:

1) Would there be any difference in changing from 16gb to 8gb for the RAM, and which type of RAM would be better (although I'm not overclocking)?
2) The mSATA SSD Drive is the one I will be installing the OS, correct? And the 'Memory - Hard Disk' will be the one with all my files, games, etc.?
3) At University I think they have installed a system whereby wifi is the only source for internet, so would I need to configure my wireless card to 867Mbps (the highest), or do I just select any option?
4) I need an opinon on the cooling mat I've selected because I have looked up reviews, but I want a more reputable review from a member on this forum :)
5) Is there any point in getting the one year deadpixel gurantee and the 3-year Gold warranty? I plan on insuring this laptop via an external company anyway.
6) Finally, would there be any way in reducing the price with this model, whilst bearing in mind that my intentions are for gaming and university work?

I don't expect every question to be answered because they are very time-consuming and selfish :p Although, all help is appreciated and I will rep anyone that does help! Thank you in advance.

I went for a Defiance because it is cheaper than the Vortex. I do, however, have a few questions:

1) Would there be any difference in changing from 16gb to 8gb for the RAM, and which type of RAM would be better (although I'm not overclocking)?

For your usage, there wouldn't be any Noticeable difference with 16gb over 8gb, and if you did find you wanted more, it's easy to add another stick yourself.

2) The mSATA SSD Drive is the one I will be installing the OS, correct? And the 'Memory - Hard Disk' will be the one with all my files, games, etc.?

That's right, mSATA is an SSD, stick the os on there for speedy boot etc, then all data on the hdd. I would personally go for the 7200rpm drive over the Scorpio blue as it will be quicker access.

3) At University I think they have installed a system whereby wifi is the only source for internet, so would I need to configure my wireless card to 867Mbps (the highest), or do I just select any option?

Any option will do, worth going for a dual band card as most uni's and public places will now support them, just future proofing.

4) I need an opinon on the cooling mat I've selected because I have looked up reviews, but I want a more reputable review from a member on this forum :)

will leave to someone who owns one to comment

5) Is there any point in getting the one year deadpixel gurantee and the 3-year Gold warranty? I plan on insuring this laptop via an external company anyway.

I personally went for both, dead pixel is a no brained, the last thing you want is a screen with dead pixels and unfortunately law allows a certain amount to be present on new screens. Even if you get your laptop insured, that won't cover parts and labour, just the overall cost of the laptop, so if something we're to break, your insurance wouldn't cover a fix.

6) Finally, would there be any way in reducing the price with this model, whilst bearing in mind that my intentions are for gaming and university work?

I would drop down to the 4720 cpu, there's no benefit for your use in the higher spec processor. Other than that and the hdd it looks spot on

Hi, thank you so much for the fast and detailed reply! I have taken your advice on board, and I've actually decided to opt for a Vortex 17" because I would prefer a bigger screen. I assume that in my new and updated spec I have chosen a dual band (?), and could you also comment on my new CPU? Thank you!

Both choices are good, the ac wireless card is the fastest and dual band, and the cpu is the entry level quad core but brilliant for gaming and general tasks, you don't need anything more.

Vortex chassis is slightly bulkier but very solid construction, personally I can't recommend it enough and it has the benefit of a mature driver set.

You are amazing with these fast replies, thank you. Since, I am buying it on finance, I was thinking of going for the Vortex IV Elite and created a new spec. However, I'm a bit on edge about spending 1.7 grand for a laptop that will last me, at most, two years? What is your view on it? In terms of the 'entry-level quad', would it be more advisable if I spent more money on going up a knotch on the above specification, or going for the one I'm posting below? Thank you! And, sorry for bombarding you with very difficult questions.

The screen has a refresh rate of 60Hz, so you'll never be able to go beyond 60fps due to hardware limitations. IMHO there's just no need for SLI in a laptop. Personally, if you're able to consider the elite budgetwise, I'd just opt for the vortex IV with a 980m, then face an upgrade in a few years. I've had mine for 1 1/2 years with an 870m in it and I'm still pretty much maxxing most games, except for the odd title like farcry 4 which are real juice monsters.

With the processor, for gaming, you'd never use the extra power in the 4890, the 4790 will be ample. Unless you will be using processor heavy packages with Uni like 3d modelling or large data sets, you won't need the 4890.

Hopefully, ordering it tomorrow!

With the Vortex you have two slots for main drives. You could go with the Scorpio Black as second drive with a Samsung EVO or a Kingston Hyper X, they are better drives and only a fiver more. Steer clear of the Kingston V300, it is the cheapest for a reason.

Hi, thank you. Would that mean that I should drop the M SSD drive then?

Just ordered it! Thanks for all your help :) the 4710 is just fine, right? I'm just a bit anxious that I've made a mistake in the spec somewhere lol

No, looks perfect to me, very nicely balanced build, you won't have any problems with that at all.

Hi, I was just browsing the forums and I decided to check the same specs but with the octane and it came out cheaper. I understand that the Octane uses a desktop CPU, but honestly would it be better to get the Octane as opposed to the Vortex?

it is not a laptop, more like a desktop replacement. Bulkier, heavier and probably run hotter due to the desktop cpu fitted in. I think it is up to you, you have lots of choices and you should go with the one you like the most.

If you are spending that much I would go for, at least, the Silver warranty, only a fiver more. This is the machine I will be ordering soon but it will be used as a desktop replacement, I just need a laptop as I do not always work from the same place but it will always be in an office type environment. It is the same weight as the Vortex, 3.9kg, but slimmer, although if you need an optical drive it has to be an external one.
I agree with Keynes, go for the one you like best.
