Hi all and thanks for any help! This is my first time building a system so I really appreciate the advice.

I'm at 75 working days pre-production waiting on the standard 3080 but was hoping to get advice on my order before it comes in the next month or two.. or more.

My main use case is gaming but I will likely also set up a Linux VM and use the system for local ML development before running big jobs on a remote resource cluster (or use it for any personal ML projects!). Because of this (and honestly in part due to the continued wait for a 3080), I'm considering upgrading to a 3090 for the extra vram. I'd like to get some opinions on this as well although the price puts me off a bit.

Regarding the build, I have an LG 27'' UHD 4K UltraGear monitor waiting in a box for a system which can run it. The order from PCS is as follows:

Please let me know if I've gotten anything wrong. I'd prefer to stick with the Intel CPU mostly due to the waiting time and hasstle switching the whole build over but if this is a huge mistake as well, let me know.

I'd love for this to be a system that lasts 7-10 years and it'll be such a huge upgrade from my current 7 year old MSI Ghost Pro laptop which I now need to suspend half off a laptop cooling pad and massage it thoroughly before it'll even think of turning on...

Thanks again!

I would say go amd but you have stated you want go to intel and you have invested alot of wait time so wont address that Well you wont need the thermal paste as that aio has good thermal paste tho if I was in your boat I would go for a platinum cooler but thats just me also I think theres now a 2tb samsung 980 evo if you wanted more space you could go 500gb 980 for operating system and 2tb 980 for gaming ? EDIT = Ignore this advice on space just realised I dont think you can go up to 980 on intel my bad !

My opinion of the 3090 is its not worth it at all for gaming literally no point for gaming some pepole will argue it is technically better then a 3080 but in a earlyier post in the 3080 thread it worked out to be £94 a frame for the extra 9 frames you would get from it in my opinion it is not a gaming gpu

I agree with Jamie, the H115i Platinum would be a more suitable cooler as the high end Intel chips need top-end cooling. The 100x design is a few years old now and the H115i comes with the benefit of a modern design and iCue software that can help flag issues and make troubleshooting easier, as well as deliver constant information. You can drop the thermal paste as well.
Storage wise I would rejig it to have a 500GB 980 pro for OS and programs, then a 1tb PCS m.2 for any games and projects, with a HDD for general storage.
As above, wouldn't recommend the 3090 for gaming, but the extra VRAM may have use if your work requires that extra oomph and you can afford to pay the extra. If you opt for the 3090 I would also recommend upping the PSU to 1000W.

I admire you patience

Some small tweaks I will recommend.

-Drop the thermal paste. The cooler comes with decent paste already.
-Wireless card - Spend £11 extra and get the Intel Ax card. It supports 5ghz giving you far better wifi performance and Bluetooth as well.
-Switch to the H115i cooler for that chip

Don't waste your money on the 3090 if its just for gaming

Thank you very much guys, I hadn't realised that about the cooler!

I will drop the thermal paste, switch to the H115i cooler, and add the wireless card. I think as Jamie says, I cannot choose the 980 storage with my CPU. Plus I mostly enjoy single player experiences and will quite happily uninstall games after I'm done with them so I don't think I need extra storage anyway (2 TB total seems like such a luxury already!).

Regarding the 3090, £97 per frame is a good way to think about it! I'll have to procrastinate on it longer until hopefully my 3080 build ships :) I almost certainly do not need that extra vram for work; just getting worn down waiting.

One last question, going through the configurator I can't find my current case so I suspect they're out of stock. I know very little about cases, would you guys recommend any similar ones? As in, good enough cooling capabilities, pretty front fans, fits everything nicely and is somewhat future proof?

They might have stock in still just none available to sell on other orders.

The Corsair 680X is in stock atm and thats a fantastic case.

Ah yes, I forgot that 10th-gen Intel still doesn't have pcie gen 4 compatibility!

Both the 680X and 500D SE are both in stock at the moment and both will be fantastic options.

Slightly off topic but the current case selection looks to be the best we've had all year, from budget through to high end!

Ah, it seems that my current case does not fit the H115i so I will have to choose another anyway.

What about the Corsair icue 5000X? That seems to fit 280mm radiators and is a similar price to my current one.

These other two look good as well but are a bit bigger and/or pricier so I hesitate a little. 500D SE does look beautiful though...

The 500D SE is a first class case, looks wonderful and has great airflow, lots of forum users have it and are very complimentary about it.
The 5000X is a new case that only came out this year so we have less anecdotal evidence to draw on, but it has received favourable reviews, and paired with the H115i Platinum should be more than adequate for your needs.

If it helps you my mate in work has identical build to you and he recieved his after 90 days went into build on 81 days but had issues with dispatch that got solved after a phone call .
he got a 3080 gamerock palit 10gb oc
