Installed Control Centre from PCS website now BSOD.

So, I had to reinstall Windows on a new SSD after my old one failed. I have one of the Tongfang models, specifically Elimina Pro Series: 15.6" Matte QHD 165Hz sRGB 100% LED Widescreen (2560x1440).

It was all working fine and I’d spent HOURS reinstalling all my programs.

At that point I noticed i couldn’t set the computer between Office Mode/“Game” mode etc, or see if Capslock was on, so I went to the PC Specialist website to download control centre.

There was no warning that this could destabilise my system or to create a system restore point, or that I needed particular versions of drivers installed. (And Windows Update wasn’t giving me any update prompts, FYI).

Now my computer is giving my PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and Windows is telling me I need to repair my installation.

Can anyone tell me what on earth to do to fix this? Especially if it saves me having to wipe my hard drive and reinstall Windows; I already lost my entire weekend to this and I need the laptop for work. I still have the USB drive I used to install windows.

So an update: somehow, on the third or fourth restart I stopped getting the BSOD. Control Centre wasn't installed properly but for good measure I uninstalled it. I checked Device Manager and a lot of "PCI Devices" were showing warning signs, so I downloaded the official chipset drivers from PCS and that fixed that.

I created a system restore point and then tried reinstalling Gaming Control Centre. Nope, BSOD again, which somehow persisted (once) after applying the system restore point.

At current it's uninstalled and my system doesn't seem to be crashing, but I have no idea if it's going to happen again. And I do need that functionality installed. How can I install Control Centre and not have it break my computer, please?

I also have this under Driver Updates but as it warns me I should only install if I have a "specific problem", I'm avoiding doing so.

Which version of Windows have you installed? Is it the same version as when you received your laptop? The reason I ask is that the Control Panel connected to your account will be for the specific install provided by PCS.

When you install Windows, you want to use the latest drivers from Intel themselves. The ones stored on your account will likely be very out of date. Again, this is the drivers on your system when received, not necessarily the ones you want on there now.

The correct process for installing Windows is as follows:

Download latest version of the OS from Microsoft
Download latest version of your Chipset drivers from the manufacturer (Intel in this case).
Download any Wifi/network drivers that you may require (The PCS one would get you by for now)
Download any GPU drivers

Copy the chipset, wifi & GPU drivers onto the USB that you are using with the Windows install on it.

Boot from USB. During initial setup be sure to select custom and be sure to wipe all partitions on your main boot drive. Take care not to delete any partitions that you have set up separately or that are on any secondary drives.

Continue install.

As soon as you are presented with Windows. Install the Chipset drivers. Reboot if necessary, if not. Install the GPU drivers. Reboot if necessary. If you have no way of accessing the internet, install the Wifi/Network drivers.... but only if necessary.

Check for updates, install all updates.

You will likely need to reboot and check for updates 2 or 3 times. This is normal.

Once you get to this point you are ready to begin customising your laptop. If you are unsure of an item, such as the control panel, a backup at this point would be a good idea. You want to do a proper backup, not a restore point. That way no matter what happens you will get yourself back to this exact state.

Make sure that you have access to the correct Control Panel for your Windows installation. If you aren't sure, contact PCS for assistance before continuing. Any conflicts here can cause serious issues (like you are finding). There are different control panel versions for different Windows builds & versions, not to mention chipset variation etc.

You need to upload them to cloud storage as it states, you can't upload them here.

Can you also post your full specs from the order page?

As it states "Zip them all up and post that zip file here" and variations on that, that's what I tried. How was I meant to know the official instructions were wrong? I will find a way to link to them from cloud storage.

Here is the full spec:

Just for information. This isn't an official support channel for PCS. We are all just volunteers here, past and present customers for the most part.

I understand that you are irked with your experience of re-installing your laptop but no-one here is obliged to assist, we do so voluntarily. If you want direct support from PCS, or to vent, the best option is to call them.

> What version of Windows?

I'm on 22H2 of Windows 10 - not what I had when I bought the laptop, but it is what I had right before it died.

> Copy the chipset, wifi & GPU drivers onto the USB that you are using with the Windows install on it.

This also doesn't make sense to me. I made the bootable USB using Windows Media Creation Tool, there's no option to add additional drivers. Regardless my PC was working fine until I tried to install control centre.

> Check for updates, install all updates.

There are no updates remaining, except the optional driver updates that it says are only for if I'm having specific problems. I took that to mean that installing one of those could *cause* problems if I don't pay attention. So should I install all of those?

> Make sure that you have access to the correct Control Panel for your Windows installation. If you aren't sure, contact PCS for assistance before continuing. Ok, I'll contact PCS and see what I can wring out of them.

I'm sorry for being irritated, this is obviously quite a frustrating situation for me and I've already lost my weekend and fallen behind on work. I hadn't realised no-one here works for PCS. Thanks for the help you've given.

I think the likely confliction is from the chipset drivers. It's my best guess. With laptops & control centres it's almost always down to chipset conflict as the control centre has certain chipset drivers associated with it during install.

My best guess to what has happened is as follows:

Latest version of Windows installed directly from Microsoft Windows Media Creation tool 22H2
Old version of chipset drivers installed from PCS account - Chipset drivers are routinely updated, I've no idea how much this is kept up on accounts though as the version sold would typically be the version attached.
The reason for the updates through Windows showing as optional is due to them potentially causing conflicts with installations. If there were no chipset drivers installed at all, they would be installed. As there is an older version on there, they then become optional as forced updates can cause issues.
When the control centre has then been installed my guess is that there have been conflicting old/new chipset drivers that have been partially updated and are causing problems resulting in the BSOD.

To try and resolve the issue I would download the latest chipset drivers from Intel and install them. Once they are installed, ensure that all updates have been cleared. I would even install the optional ones.

I would create a backup so that you don't lose any more time installing, before then re-attempting control centre.

The BSOD Doctor
All the dumps are identical and all the BSODs occurred because of a driver called ACPIDriver.sys which is, I believe, part of Control Center. This driver can be seen clearly being called in the lead-up to the page fault that caused the BSOD (you read these stacks from the bottom up)...

That doesn't mean that Control Center is automatically at fault, although the version of this driver that you have installed is 3½ years old...

    Information from resource tables:
This could potentially be a conflict between ACPIDriver.sys and some other third-party driver that you have installed. However, at 3½ years old it's most likely that this version of Control Center is at fault.

In addition I can see that you're running a lot of very old drivers....
Code:
ACPIDriver ACPIDriver Driver Kernel 14/09/2020 07:20:31
NVHDA Service for NVIDIA Hig Kernel 03/01/2022 10:46:34

RTSUER Realtek USB Card Reade Kernel 10/04/2020 10:45:22

I see that you've installed an old version of WIndows 10 too...
Code:
OS_VERSION: 10.0.19041.1
That's the 20H1 version. Why would you not install the latest version?

This looks to me to be a badly configured and older Windows 10 system running some old drivers and probably an incompatible version of Control Centre.

I've actually already updated the Nvidia drivers to the newest ones available, but I don't seem to be able to get hold of new drivers for anything else. I've tried the Intel website for more drivers, for example, but it's really not clear where the best place to go is for new ones otherwise.

Code:
NVHDA Service for NVIDIA Hig Kernel 20/01/2023 10:48:10
nvlddmkm nvlddmkm Kernel 15/02/2024 11:38:19

> From where did you source all your drivers?

Whatever Windows 10 found while installing itself I guess, I didn't do anything special with drivers beyond that, and my laptop was working fine before I tried to install control centre. I installed new chipset drivers first from the PCS website and then from Intel because some devices seemed to be broken in Device Manager, which fixed it, but that was after trying to install Control Centre so I'm not certain if they were broken from the start. I've also installed all the optional driver updates proffered by Windows Update.

I called up PCS but they haven't been much help so far, only said they'd send me an email but haven't got any of the details of my crashes yet etc.

Your windows version is very out of date, it's version 2004 (20H1) which went out of support a long time ago (Dec 14 2021)

Older windows versions fall out of support and aren't eligible for updates. If drivers are outdated, control center won't work as control center relies on most drivers on the system.

Unless @ubuysa got the dump dates mixed up, and I can't read them as I'm on a Mac, I can only go from the history.

From a clean install, you had exclamation marks by chipset components, so you installed the chipset driver from the PCS site.

That's number one. That chipset driver will be well out of date by now and likely to cause instability on it's own.

Another potential pointer is that there are historic dump files on the system which could not have been there after a clean install

Number 2, what method did you use to clean install using an up to date image? Where did you source the system image and how did you configure drivers?

Number 3, it appears system drivers hadn't been installed generally by the end of your second post. So it definitely appears that windows hadn't been configured first before installing the management driver. The management driver has to be installed last after windows is properly configured as it ties into all system drivers. If windows isn't configured the management driver has no way of working.
