Internet Speed Issues - Issue with laptop?

For some time I have been experiencing low speeds peaking at around 2mbs, bust mostly sitting at 0.5.

My ISP has been working away and found no issues so I thought I would do a little test.

On my PCspecialist laptop i get the problem, but on my rather old Desktop HP using an external Netgear wifi I get the expected 12mb.

Any ideas before I raise a support case?

Can you connect the laptop via an ethernet cable to your router and turn off wifi?

Are your drivers up to date - specifically the network and chipset drivers?

However, having said that, I've had some serious performance issues with my Intel WiFi card but the latest round of drivers seem to be ok.

Have you tried the external Netgear adapter on your PCS machine?

Okay so either I am being stupid or something is not right. Both my new PCSpecialist PC and laptop have the same problem. The laptop is not registering the netgear wifi so cannot test that either.

First thing to try is with the laptop cables into the router, and do a Speedtest. That will tell you what speeds you should be getting.

Sorry meant to add I have that done that and the same issue. PlusNet insisted I did that as part of my reporting the issue.

As I say I am consistently getting 10mbs plus on the Netgear Exeternal wifi on the old pc.

What do you mean by external net gear Wi-Fi? Do you mean a usb single or something? Is it connecting to your Wi-Fi?

Yep its a USB external Wifi. As i say the PC is very old so no wireless option.

There have been multiple issues with people doing in place upgrades to windows 10, rather than a clean install. One of the issues is related to networking. I would try a clean install with the latest image direct from Microsoft. Then make sure all your drivers are installed and see how it is then.

Given the newness of the laptop and PC i should probably take this to the support desk I guess.

The probability of a similar problem on two computers is remote, it's far more likely to be something related to your location, you should certainly eliminate any possibility of it being a localised problem before involving PCS.

There have already been some very important and useful troubleshooting suggestions made that you seem not to have yet tried....

1. You know the Netgear external WiFi device works with your router, so temporarily connect that to one or other (or both) your PCS computers, be sure to install any necessary drivers of course, and see whether the PCS computers work via that device.

2. Have you checked that you have all the necessary drivers installed on your PCS computers? Are they the latest drivers?

3. The question of a Windows upgrade has been raised already, there has been a very recent upgrade released, so have you done a Windows upgrade recently and if so how?

In addition....

You say that you have been having these issues 'for some time' and that implies that at some point in the past the two PCS computers were working fine. Can you please confirm whether the networking on thetwo PCS computers has ever been working ok?
