Invalid Windows Product Key

Hi. I got my new PC from PC specialist today, plugged everything in and booted it up, entered the windows product key from the back of the PC, and it says "The product key is not valid". I tried to restart the PC but this time with the Windows 7 disc in the disc drive (came with the PC) but when I rebooted, surge protection came up or something. Anyone know what I'm supposed to do?

Okay, I booted from the disc drive, and chose to install windows on the internal SSD. But it already had a copy of windows installed on it. I need to overwrite it?

Yes. When you boot the install disk choose the Custom option and delete all partitions on the SSD so that all the space shows as unallocated. Then create a single partition the size of the entire SSD (Windows may also create a second, small, partition called System Reserved, this is normal and you should leave that partition alone). Now install Windows into the (large) partition you just created.

I had this situation where I installed the OS and registered it on installation but it is not actually activated at that point. I configured the OS and backed it up as a disc image. Months later I went to use it again and had the request to activate and the 'product key not valid' message. From there, I was asked to purchase a new one. However, in the Control panel / System (I think it was), I was able to activate normally.
