Hi all.

I am a complete novice with PC building and I currently use a very basic laptop and GeForce now ultimate (RTX4080) for my gaming fix. I really want my own pc to run predominantly iRacing on a single screen at 1080p or 1440p with maxed out graphics settings. Can anyone suggest a build?

I have seen the below and wondered if this is enough or overkill?

Thanks in advance

CASE: CORSAIR 3000D AIRFLOW - BLACK

We can only advise on PCSpecialist builds I'm afraid.

If you can let us know your max budget and the make and model of your screen if you already have one? If not then your max budget for the screen as well?

The screen is going to bottleneck any modern system.

Within the 2k, we could do a 1440p system plus a decent screen?

I’m such an amateur that I didn’t know the screen would cause an issue. I just thought the more screens you had the bigger the performance hit. If you could find me something with a monitor then great - I don’t mind if it’s only 1080p either.

Cheers

I don't think you are going to be able to max out the graphics settings, even with iRacing. You wouldn't want to anyway, as the diminishing results are like falling off a cliff. You can get very good and sensible options in iRacing at this sort of budget though.

This is where I would land, and leaves a nice amount for a 1440p monitor. If you are looking to upgrade to triple screens down the line then I would stick with 1080p as it'll take a top GPU to run triple 1440p.

Thanks for that Scott.
Not interested in triples but may look at a widescreen monitor at some point. I’m used to gaming at 60fps so don’t mind capping at that. Am I right in thinking a 1440p monitor is less intensive than a 1080p?

1440p is up from 1080p. 1080p 1920 x 1080 is bare entry level and mostly avoided these days. Then 1440p 2560 x 1440, then ultrawide 3440 x 1440, then superwide 5120 x 1440, then 4k 3840 x 2160

1080p is only really used in very basic systems these days. It’s incredibly poor vs 1440p

1440p is a much higher resolution than 1080p. As @SpyderTracks has highlighted above, I think you would want 3440 x 1440 for iRacing, it would certainly give a much better horizontal view. The ideal spec is the Superwide 5120x1440 but you need a top end GPU to run that sort of resolution and the budget isn't there for the GPU or the monitor (ITRO £900 for the monitor).

Monitor options below. You would need to add around £100 to your budget though. I wouldn't cap the framerate but I would definitely take advantage of the freesync technology to keep things smooth. I don't have the settings at their max in iRacing as it doesn't make a difference to the visuals in a fast paced sim. Just use the presets to hone in on the performance you are looking for then tweak the odds and sods to get it perfect. Having the maximum crowd in the grandstand is completely pointless, same with the Pit crews etc. There are so many settings that make no sense being at max.

Brilliant. Feels like I’m getting there now! I like the ultra wide monitor so that’s something to think about. In terms of spec, the only other game I play is American Truck Sim - I assume I’d have no issue with that based on the above

Different manufacturers. Nvidia and AMD are the main competitors. You need to compare the GPUs individually, and their merits, to know what to aim for.

Flat panel rasterization AMD tends to offer better value. Bells and whistles, Nvidia tends to be the better option.

Looks great to me. The 7800XT should run iRacing nicely. Try with the MSAA off and then bump it up a level at a time until you're happy with the rates and it should run brilliant.

I can't run maxed settings on my 4080 so you just need to manage expectations when it comes to settings. Games aren't designed to have everything maxed, they are designed to give the option to push technology..... so a slider set to 11 isn't ideal. It's like setting your blowers in your car to max speed and max temp, that's not the ideal setting for a comfortable drive :)

What frames do you get? I'm looking at a 27 inch 1440p monitor and I'd be happy with anything 60 to 100fps to be honest. I'm used to 60fps my whole life. Also 7800 XT or RTX4070 super?

I'm locked in at 120hz, but this is for VR with a resolution of 1440 x 3320 (a bit more than 1440p). My GPU typically runs around 75-80% utilisation but I tuned the settings to get this by turning the eye candy on/off. I just wanted the headroom for a busy grid etc, nothing worse than jitter in VR :D

With the 7800XT you will easily achieve more than 100hz. With the right settings you would get a solid 144hz no problem. I would probably use similar methodology to what I did. Open it up with the default settings and see how it runs. The biggest impact to performance is going to be the MSAA, but you typically get the biggest reward with this also. Try 2x then 4x then 8x, see how it goes. I'm running 8x on mine just now IIRC, but I did have to dial back some other settings.

On a single panel you'll have more headroom, if you opted for a triple screen layout you often have to be more frugal with the settings.

I would probably choose the 7800XT over the 4070 Super. The Super will give you more frames but the 7800XT is better value and has more vRAM, which is crucial nowadays.
