Is it safe buying Optimus V?

Hi

I recently posted the details about 15.6'' Optimus i was going to buy. But in the past few days i was reading a comments about this laptop and saw that the fan works quiet loud and spins at 100% even if the temperatures are not very high. But these post were a few months old so maybe the fan issues were fixed? can anyone confirm that? I fully understand this is mid performance laptop with dedicated GPU and it will have some noise but from what I've read it is beyond normal.
Also i saw that there is many faulty returns which comes back with different issues and sometimes takes ages to be fixed.
There is no perfect company which wouldn't have problematic customers but i just asking these questions to be safe and if it is worth buying from PCS and I tend to take a month or two looking around before spending my money.

Thank you

Not sure about the Optimus and noise now, although also not sure how many had problems and whether it was widespread. As for PCS, I found them excellent when I got my first laptop and I was kept informed all the way - it was a couple of days behind preditcted time but I ordered around a bank holiday when there was a rush of orders. I will certainly be using them again later this year when I get my next laptop, which could be an Optimus V 17.3, I am also looking out for feedback about it. However, I want a 17.3 screen as my sight is not great and I would prefer spending money on more RAM, an SSD etc on the Optimus rather than buying the next up 17.3, especially as it has a backlit keyboard which I am not fussed about.

Same as Stephen, very happy with PCS. You also need to keep in mind that many people that are happy with their laptops won't post anything on the forums. You have 7 working days once you receive your laptop to return it for a refund so I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks guys for your answers.
Yea i kept in mind the balance between happy and not so happy customers and as i've said there is always complains withing any company.
The other thing which I've read apart from fan are decent, good quality for a low price :)

I have the 17" version. The fan seems fine now I'm not sure was it a bios upgrade or takes time to settle.

Real world example if I'm watching a match stream the fan usually stays at level 1 (33%ish) not noisy, if I'm playing a game (warhammer spacemarie) the fan is usually at level 2 (66%) to level 3 (100%) which is a bit loud, but not like the girlfriends hairdryer. Put it this way in the same room the other half can still watch her stuff on TV and not complain (which she is not shy about).

As for random fan at 100% with little or no load yes this does happen but less and less the last time was yest for approx 5min the time before that I can rember was around Christmas. It seems more like and internal test now than an out of control fan.

I am not using a cooling pad just a stand that has the back raised approx 45°

Hope this helps any other questions just ask.

Cheers, TJC, good info. I already have a cooling pad so it seems there should not be much of a problem.

Also i thought about possibility modifying fan speed by using programs like cpu-z.Would have an effect on warranty?

I see, i'm just trying to find the way of reducing the noise so i could use it in class.

I had mine for a few months now. Maybe I am one of the lucky few but I did not experienced any excessive noise level. Only thing, the fan stay active for a while after a long gaming session.
Overall, a very good laptop. Maybe it would be worth investing a bit on a better touchpad as the default one is not exactly responsive and I ended up disablying it to use the mouse alone. I don't know if anybody else has the same feeling about it.

Hey folks, thanks for your replies I'm much appreciated

After doing some more research I banged into Vortex IV http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/quotes/vortexIV-LE/aXj6FXWtbC/ almost same specs. As far as I can see it has twice as much went holes thank Optimus V and less bad reviews with overall better raiting. I also saw that keynes got this laptop which made me confident :D

I increase my budget up to £850-900

Like always got a few questions:
It comes up with Gigabit Lan & Wireless card, should i stick with it or go for killer gaming one?
Is there any difference between hyper-x and Samsung DDR? They have a same speed and Hyper-X cost a £1-2 more .
Would Creative sound card make any difference to integrated sounds system ?

If you have this laptop please leave your comment :)

Sorry for being so enoying and asking a lot

Thank you!

P.S. newbie question: how to give rep to posters?

I would go with the killer 1202

It wouldn't make a noticeable difference

If you mean the external soundcard it will make it less portable, I was worried about the sound but when using my headset the sound is crystal clear and pretty good at least in my opinion.

I went for the 'Gigabit LAN & Wireless Intel Ultimate N-6300 (450Mbps)'. I went for that for the 5GHz for future-proofing.

I don't know if it would make difference. I went for the 8GB of Samsung in the end but made sure I got 1 8GB stick so that I can just buy another 8GB stick in the future if needed. I think the Vortex IV has 4 slots for RAM.

As for fan noise mine is pretty quiet unless it's using the GPU for gaming. I'm guessing you won't be doing that in class. :)

I prob won't use it in the lessons but i might do in the brakes sitting in the quiet library. Also lan party with my friends so i won't be using headphones.
Also N-6300 is Gigabit lan but with intel wireless

I have to say that my Optimus V 17" version has no issue with noise in my lectures, off of the cooling pad. Saying this, a lecture theatre is much larger than a classroom, and over the past few months it's only ramped up once or twice during a lecture, but not really much of an annoyance to anyone else (That they've complained about!!).

I must say though, while not away from home, I run it on a cooling pad, which is excellent, and in this situation I hardly hear the fan ramp up at all, except for when it's under load, which is expected. Naturally the 17" version would deal with heat better than a 15" version, simply due to casing size. My library sessions were also non disruptive (mostly, again, once or twice over the past few months).

And you only need to upgrade the wireless card if you feel there is going to be use for the extra speed or features a better one offers you. My standard Intel card works fine for me, although it's not been too reliable in my halls of residence, but quite reliable in my lectures. Also very reliable at home, with the expected wireless hassles you encounter.

Hi, I was thinking of buying a laptop from pc specialist, and I read that you said that they have a 7 day return period. Does it actually say that on the website, anywhere?
