I've been out of the game too long and need some guidance!

Howdy y'all!

As title says I've been kind of out of the loop for which hardware is worth its price in performance. I'm going to use this PC for video editing, gaming new titles on ultra settings, and everyday life things.
Here's the specs I've put together so far!
Case
PCS P209 ARGB MID-CABINET
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 Twelve Core Processor i7-12700K (3.6GHz) 25MB Cache
Motherboard
GIGABYTE Z690 UD DDR4 (LGA1700, USB 3.2, PCIe 5.0) - ARGB Ready!
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics card
12 GB ASUS TUF GEFORCE RTX 4070 OC EDITION - HDMI, DP
SSD Drive
1TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3300MB/W)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 750 W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Processor Cooling
PCS FrostFlow 100 RGB V3 Series High Performance CPU Cooler
Operating system
Windows 11 Professional 64 Bit - inc. Single License

I already have a second external SSD that I'll use for storing other all my other stuff, it's the Samsung Portable SSD T5 - 1TB

Let me know what you guys think and if there's any recommendations!

Hiya

What make and model monitor are you using for gaming?

What's your max budget?

Can you include the configurable link at the bottom of the quote?

Any reason for windows pro?

Hey!

My monitor is a Samsung 27'' C27F369FHU 1920x1080p

Max budget is £1690

I'm not sure how to include that link :s

I chose windows pro because I'm told it has better security compared to home

It's just the link at the bottom of the quote, just copy and paste it?

The only difference is that it has bitlocker, is that something you use? Other than that, the only benefits are related to working on a domain
I forgot to mention, my max budget is the price that is estimated before VAT

This is what I'd suggest, with reasoning,

Case is paramount to the build, it's not just about looks, it determines what airflow can carry through the system
The processor should be on the latest generation as they greatly outperform 12th Gen
RAM really needs 32Gb for the work you're doing
No need for the expensive Asus GPU, won't perform any differently to any other 4070.
The Drives, restricted by budget, but something you can easily add either from your old system, or add drives as you go, separate message on that

Few additionals on this.

Your current monitor is going to hugely limit this system, both for productivity and for gaming. For the 4070, and for the work you're doing, an Ultrawide would be a far better fit. To make it clear, the system won't be able to perform at it's potential unless you upgrade the monitor. 1080p is really a dead resolution with how powerful modern systems are. You could keep your current one as a secondary monitor.

As examples:

Secondly, the drive setup, I've only added the primary OS and program drive due to budget on the understanding that you can carry across drives from your previous system, or add them one by one when you funds available.

For video editing, the preferred setup is:

  1. OS & Application files (This is in the build already)
  2. General documents/download files (This would be a standard 7200rpm HDD as they're more reliable in the event of failure, you have time to get your data off to another drive should you need to)
  3. Project media (video, images, sound, etc.) (A fast NVME drive is best for this, whatever size you need)
  4. Cache files (a small SATA SSD would be sufficient for this, even just 250Gb)

Thank you so much for your time and effort to put this together for me!
I have a couple of questions though:
Is the 1000W PSU really necessary? I feel like a 750W will still do just fine here.
Also about the CPU cooler, is it truly worth paying the extra ~£93 for water cooling?
For the wireless network card, I'm going to be using an Ethernet cable at all times so I'll skimp out on that one

With modern GPUs since the RTX series launch, they have a symptom called Transient spikes where they can pull up to double their TDP. If you don't have enough headroom this will result in instability or BSODS.

There is a brand new PSU standard called ATX3 which is just hitting the market that account for transient spikes, but they're not available yet on PCS.

Transient spikes are also far more significant on a video processing workflow because of the constant demand it puts on the GPU

It's a bare minimum on modern Intel's they're incredibly inefficient and need absolutely top end cooling just to keep from thermal throttling. I personally wouldn't choose an Intel system, they're the poor man's processor now, AMD are far better.

Absolutely. Just worth mentioning that card also has Bluetooth in case that's something you need.

Alright! Thanks so much for all this <3
I couldn't find a lot of info or benchmarks for the Solidigm ssd, is it worth spending the little bit extra for the 970 evo which has a brilliant track record?

The 970Evo is an old Gen 3 card that maxxes out at 3500mbs which is slow (half the speed) by todays standards. For a Gen 4 card you'd want the 980 Pro, but it has lower write endurance than the Solidgm.
