Just checking this spec for a 15.6" Cosmos IX is ok for "casual gaming"

Hi,

I'm getting this laptop for my son. He will use it for his work etc. but wants to do some gaming as well. He is happy with what he calls "casual gaming" and is aware the graphics card is limited to 1080p gaming. Price is a bit of an issue which is why we've chosen this model.

My question would be whether there is a risk of over heating for some games? I was actually looking at this model last month. Then the i5 processor was available but not the GeForce GTX 1650. Now the i5 is not an option so I'm wondering whether the i7 wil be hotter for some games? Or is this not an issue?

Is this your absolute maximum budget?

Do you currently have a machine that is running Windows10 but won’t be used afterwards?

What sort of games is he expecting to play and what work will he need on it (Uni work? Anything particularly demanding required for his course?)

Yes. If the GTX 1650 had been available in December the price would have been about £770 (the configuration process allowed an i5 at the time but said the GTX 1650 would be available until January 15th). Now only the i7 is available so the price now is £904.

An Asus S200E with an i3 processor might be available.

The work would be very basic, keeping track of accounts...the games, I don't think he's that worried about it...

OK appreciate this is just very slightly more than the budget but I have added in Silver warranty (1 year collect and return) which is only £5 and then also 1 year dead pixel guarantee £19).

I have changed your drives around a bit to give you MORE GB space as 128 + 256 will get used up really quickly if he loads a game or two on (not that this will play any top end games very well), but suggest more space anyway (install windows 10 on the M2 drive).

Also pick the fastest RAM possible - the 2666Hz in this case.

The reason why I asked if you have a windows 10 machine already is that it is possible to move the licence across from that one to this machine rather than pay for a new Windows 10 licence, HOWEVER, it means you wont then be able to use this licence on the old machine again - this would save you around £100.

Finally, I have removed Bullguard, Windows now comes with a very good free virus protector, Defender, and BG has been known to cause problems.

Many thanks for your suggestions. They make a lot of sense! I have kept them in but gone for your 1TB PCS suggestion as well.

The battery life is less of a concern as he does keep his current laptop plugged in most of the time.

On the subject of transferring the windows 10 licence that looks like it will work, I think. The old laptop is a refurbished Asus Vivobook which we bought from the BT Shop in 2014. It had Windows 8 and was upgraded to Windows 10. It has a digital licence linked to a Microsoft account. I believe if Windows 10 is installed on an OEM machine then the licence is not transferrable to a new machine.

However, since the laptop was refurbished I'm assuming BT put a new installation of Windows 8 on it at the time and that counts as a "Retail" copy of the software. But I don't know how to confirm this, so at the moment I've left the Operating System as Windows 10 Home.
Are you able to advise with this please? Obviously it would be nice to save £100!

I originally chose the 1650 but at the time there were stock problems so i upgraded to the Ti, I also started off with a 512GB PCS SSD, which I've recently upgraded to a 1TB crucial

It seems there are supply problems around graphic card so I shall have to wait in hope. I don't think the 2GB GeForce MX350 will be appropriate.
