Laptop Booting Failures

I have a laptop with a primary SSD and a storage HD. Recently, the HD got the click of death. Data was backed up, but the constant clicking is driving me nuts, so I opened up the case and removed the HD.

When the laptop next booted, I got a dialog on screen saying "EFI PXE 0 for IPv4 boot failed." Clicking ok led to another one saying "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Insert Recovery Media and Hit any key..."

I panicked and refitted the HD, but I still see the dialogs. Sometimes it does then go on to boot into Windows. Sometimes it then goes to a BIOS menu. Sometimes I have to jab the F7 key and go into the BIOS to manually select the SSD to boot from.

How can I remove the HD and stop these menus from appearing please? Thanks.

Hi SpyderTracks, thanks for the reply. I'm sure the OS is not installed on the HDD. I can get the laptop to boot by stumbling around in boot menus even though the HDD is dead. The SSD is the C: drive once Windows is running, and the HDD, which used to appear as D:, is no longer there.

You'd said it was only after you refitted the HDD that it sometimes booted.

So you've made sure C is on the SSD in disk management?

Hi, I'm not being clear, sorry.

System was fine, but HDD clicking.
I removed the HDD and next power on I saw the dialogs and it booted into some BIOS screen.
I panicked, turned it off, and refitted the HDD.
Next power on I still saw the same dialogs and it booted into the same BIOS screen. At that point I started stumbling around in the menus and managed to make it continue booting into Windows.

I'm pretty sure I could remove the HDD and stumble through the BIOS menus and continue into Windows, but I don't want to keep fiddling until I understand exactly what I'm doing.

I hope that's a little clearer.

So before continuing, be sure the C drive is on the SSD in disk manager.

So far you haven't booted it without the HDD, and can't work on assumptions. But so far the symptoms are that the OS is installed on the HDD.

Hi, I've confirmed that. I've booted into Windows now, and only the SSD is showing, as drive C:. The HDD is completely dead. I've attached a picture of what I see in Disk Management.

Then remove the HDD, make sure th SSD is correctly seated and verify the boot order in the BIOS is set correctly and try booting again
