Laptop temps and possible re-paste?

Hi all, it's been a while since I was last on. I've been doing some spring cleaning with my laptop recently and reinstalled Windows due to several driver issues with my graphics card (which ended up being a bigger pain than I could ever of imagined. My USB ports still won't recognise my USB sticks 19 out of 20 times even though I have un-installed the drivers 3 times now :s)
On the subject of cleaning, I have cleaned my laptop recently as I think I'm running stupidly high temps. Everything looks dust and dirt free ( I've never done a re-paste though) but I'm still running temps on my CPU up to 101oC and high 80's low 90's on my GPU. I've never done a re-paste and I'm not overly confident about doing this myself. Do you think this could be the problem as they have always ran quite high since I bought my laptop? Is this normal for my spec or should i be worried? My spec is in my signature below. Can anyone advise on what the problem could be or is it really as simple as doing a re-paste?

depending on when was the last time paste was applied, it could be
if it is, doing a repaste is as easy as they get, just youtube it and you will probably even find your laptop model repasting video
whatever it is i would seriously fix it as soon as posible: those temps can damage your components

I'm repasting my Vortex 3 for the first time this weekend having never done it before... I can let you know how easy it is on Monday!

I have similar temps to you on cpu and GPU.

Right, just done it:

At 18:45 this evening

CPU: 53oC idle, then up to 97oC when rendering 1080p video
CPU before.png
GPU: 43oC idle, then up to 84oC during first 5 minutes Metro: Last Light (dropping to 75oC when I quit out of it)
GPU before.png

At 19:25 this evening... five minutes after repasting:

CPU: 41oC idle and then up to 69oC max when rendering the same 1080p file as before:
CPU after.png

GPU: 41oC idle, then up to 63oC during first five minutes of Metro: Last Light
GPU after.png

So… when idle:

the CPU has gone from 53oC to 41oC (23% decrease)
the GPU has dropped from 43oC to 41C (5% decrease)

Under a certain amount oload:
The CPU has dropped from 97oC to 69C (29% decrease)
The GPU has dropped from 84oC to 63oC (25% decrease)

Couldn't be more happier. At no point did I really believe I was doing anything that would make a difference. I got the old paste all over my hands and made a complete mess of my table. And you never really know how you're new paste will spread once you put the heat sink down on it. But my new low temperatures are so sexy to look at.

I'd recommend re-pasting ASAP dude.

Wow I wasn't expecting those kind of results if I'm honest!! I think I'm going to have to do the same!! What did you use to remove the old paste?

How much pressure do you apply when putting the heat sinks back on after doing the repaste?

There wasn't much choice in the matter. I just screwed everything back on until it all stopped screwing any further.

Aaaahhhhhhh, well that makes things a little simpler lol!!

Well everything is ordered, wish me luck haha :)

This clips shows exactly what our chassis looks like (admittedly it is the P150em whereas mine is the P170em but they look exactly the same except for the loss of two inches somewhere). So I just had this YouTube video on my tablet as i was doing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSyH-gfSsxI

At 1:04 is the first bit to take off and repaste.

1:41 is the next bit to take off and repaste.

Can't really remember which was GPU and which was CPU but frankly I don't really care either. Just did them both and they're both cooler so job done!

1:55 to 3:50 are not necessary to remove for a repaste. That's just if you want to have a look at your fan.

Spot on thanks for the info. Think I'm going to give this a go over the next week or so. Fingers crossed things work out as good as they did for you :)

Hi

Well went to do a re-paste tonight and things didn't go as planned :s I did the GPU and as far as I'm aware it's gone fine. Then I went to re-paste the CPU. I got the first 3 screws off no problems at all. I then went to unscrew the final screw, but I just couldn't get any leverage on it at all. It was as if the screw has been threaded slightly. All the other screws came off with very little effort so it's not like I could of done this myself, plus it was the last one I tried to remove. I've tried several different screw driver sizes, but I just couldn't get this last screw off. I'm not sure what to do, is this something I should get in touch with PCSpecialists about? As far as I can tell, this screw seemed damaged/warped and is completely impossible to screw off!! This is the first time I've tried to unscrew any of these parts. I'm now worried about the CPU overheating in future due to not being able to do a re-paste on my CPU. I've had my laptop about 2 and a half years now. It has a 3 year silver Warranty, would PCSPECIALISTS cover this under the warranty? Please help. :(

We love you Ukraine
Your warranty covers labour for three years, you'd have to pay for postage but I believe pcs will look into it for free, they might charge for a repaste. Would be worth giving them a call
