Laptop video editing and USB

Hi All,

Thinking of getting a new laptop for general use and some (personal) GoPro video editing (mainly 1080p but also little bit of 4K).

I don't know loads about computers, so some advice would be appreciated about that specific usage and the laptop chassis. Specifically:

1) Does the I7 7700HQ quad core offer vast improvements over the quad core I5 7300HQ, or will the I5 quad core be suffecient?

2) I believe that most editing will be CPU based, as such will the Cosmos VI be ok, or is it worth going for the Optimus VIII with the 1050GPU?

3) The USB C on the Cosmos / Optimus, is it 3.0 or 3.1? The configurator appears to say 3.0, whilst the detailed spec states 3.1?

4) Does this spec appear ok or am i going well over the top.

I am thinking

Never bought a laptop without touching it or seeing the quality of hte screen before, so any advice is appreaciated.

Thanks

The i7 is worth having for rendering videos due to the hyperthreading. It's one of the relatively niche things where the i7s merits over an i5 are quite clear :)

The GTX 1050 (ti) is overwhelmingly better than the 940mx, and for projects that make use of GPU accelerated features this may be useful. And the build overall seems to cost the same kind of ballpark cost.

Even if you stick to the 1050 non-ti it's still a much better buy, though the extra horsepower and VRAM of the -ti may be worth it. I'm not a video editor so can't say from personal experience

The SM961 is faster than the PM961 and is only a few £ more so I'd probably go for that one.

I'd probably also go for the 2x8gb FURY ram, since the latency is lower and it's in dual channel, which may make the performance a bit better, for a pretty similar cost.

I believe the USB is 3.1 - the chassis certainly supports USB 3.1 http://www.clevo.com.tw/clevo_prodetail.asp?id=999&lang=en
