Lenovo g550 pxe and supervisor pswd

Hi guys,

I accidentally dropped my lenovo g550 while it was in the process of shutting down and now when I try to switch it on

It is giving the following error:

PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: existing broadcom PXE ROM

I tried looking everywhere for a solution, and the best I could come up with was the thread listed below on this forum:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?2655-PXE-E61-Media-Test-Failure-check-cable

I am not able to follow any of the steps because when I try to enter the menu, it asks for a supervisor password which I don't have.

I would really appreciate if someone could help me sort out this problem as I do not wish to go to a repair shop cause they charge a lot and according to the above thread, the problem could be sorted at home.

Any response or help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

It looks like you've either damaged your hard disk or shaken it loose from the connector. You're getting this message because the BIOS is running through the boot list trying to find a device to boot, normally your hard disk would be near the top of that list (probably just after the CD/DVD ROM) but if the disk doesn't respond when queried the BIOS moves on. The last entry in your list is a network boot and there is no network cable attached, hence the error message you see.

If you still have the Windows install disk boot then that and select the repair option, see whether you can see the hard disk from there (use the command prompt). If you can see it run a disk check (enter the command "chkdsk /f" but without the quotes). You might also try a startup repair from the Windows install disk. If you can't boot the Windows install disk (or any bootable CD/DVD) then you'll probably need a repair shop.

If you can't see the hard disk from the Windows install system (but you can boot the Windows install disk) then open up the laptop case and check that the hard disk is seated properly, make certain that the connectors are properly seated. If you can you might try taking the hard disk out and putting it into a USB caddy (they're very cheap) and plugging that into another PC. If you can see the disk that way copy off all your user data. You'll then probably have to refit the disk to the laptop, reformat it and do a clean reinstall of Windows.

If the laptop really is dead then you might want to get your next laptop from PCS (http://pcspecialist.co.uk/) you'll certainly get more bangs for your buck from PCS that you will from the high street. :)
