Looking for a friend, thoughts on this?

Hi there,

My friend is not a big pc guy and wants something he can buy and use for the relatively foreseeable future without any particular upgrades and whatnot. He's mostly interested in League, WoW, and other lower intensity games. I've suggested this, and apologise if I've made any glaring errors as it's been a few years since I last built anything. I'd like some feedback if possible on this as I don't want to get it wrong!

I've just done a quick build guessing its 1080p given the pricing on your build and what type of games they are after.

If there's more in the budget we can make a better machine but if its for a 1440p monitor they will realistically have to look at a bigger budget than this

That will provide enough for WOW and LOL but also the foundation is there incase they want to upgrade the GPU at some point to give an extra boost to the visuals. It's always better to have that option in mind rather than having to forkout for a whole new PC down the line. (even if they're not interested now).

@Resistance100 Thanks for getting back to me so fast, the price is probably around £900 max, so that would be workable what you've provided. I didn't include a HDD as I thought that the SSD would probably suffice for the amount he uses it for (rarely more than perhaps 5-6 games on it at any one time) - do you think that it is possible to drop it? He has a separate laptop he uses for work that would be used to store files and work software so that wouldn't clog up that area.

I noticed you've gone 2x 8 on the RAM, what is the difference between 1x16 and 2x8? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

Again, thanks for your input.

It's better to have a seperate drive for your games and files. with the smaller faster M.2 saved for the OS. This has the benefit of if you have to reinstall windows for any reason you won't lose any of your date on the second drive. Changing it for 1tb would save some money or changing that one to an SDD for faster speeds is an option.

I make a couple of edits and post :)

With the ram it works best in channels. Most motherboards are dual channel so by having two sticks you increase the bandwidth and thus performance of the ram.

Just amended it for a smaller HDD but with the money saved i've managed to get wi-fi in the build for the budget :)

@Resistance100 that second build looks very good actually. He isn't always able to have a wired connection so that would help tremendously I imagine and saves buying something to sort out that issue down the line. He doesn't care for beauty - if I wanted to cut down the case to a budget (£23) one it seems there would be no issues with this. Also power supply is bringing up a warning that it is more than necessary - is it worth bringing this down as it is likely a precaution for future upgrades?

The risk with the cheaper case would be cooling. Potentially causing issues down the line so i wouldn't recommend it personally.

The PSU was for future upgrading so feel free to downsize if not needed. However i would stick to a Corsair one as they're reliable and the last thing you want is to risk damaging your components. 650w will still allow an upgrade in the future for 1080p.

@Resistance100 thanks again, I'll consider the case piece. Sorry, I don't think I answered your initial question on the monitor, I believe he intends on using a 1080p monitor, would this be adequate?

@Resistance100 okay great, thanks so much for your input, and I'll put it forward to him. I'll probably bring down the 650w and consider a case with better ventilation. Thanks again
