Looking for Advice on New Top End Gaming Laptop

Hi all.

Thanks for looking at this and I hope you guys can offer some good advice on some options to create a top end gaming laptop. I have a desktop already but with me being around various locations other than home I am looking to invest significantly into a solid gaming machine. I would be looking to try to make it as future proof as possible(though I know that is near impossible these days but still:p ) My gaming list includes things like BF3, MW3, Crysis2, Old republic, GW2(when its released) plus many more. I would possibly be doing some video rendering too should i be away from home for long periods of time. I have been looking at two options so far but have quirries about certain things, so I will list both specs I have created so far(only listed the core parts of the laptop):

Build 1:

17.3 Vortex 2 17

Vortex 2 Glossy Full HD LED Widescreen

Intel Core i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2860QM(2.5GHz) 8MB

8GB Kingston Hyper-X Genesis 1600Mhz SODIMM DDR3

2.0 nvidia GEforce GTX 580M DirectX 11

500GB WD Scorpio Black Sata 3GB/s 16MB Cache

Artic MX4 Extreme Thermal Con Compound

Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Surround 5.1 PRO

Gigabit Lan & Wireless Intel Advanced-N 6230 3Mbps + Bluetooth

Build 2

18.4 Viper 3

Viper 3 18.4 Glossy Full HD LED Widescreen

Intel Core i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2860QM(2.5GHz) 8MB

8GB Kingston Hyper-X Genesis 1600Mhz SODIMM DDR3

2 x 1.5GB nvidia GeForce GTX 560M - Direct X 11 (SLI)

500GB WD Scorpio Black Sata 3GB/s 16MB Cache

Artic MX4 Extreme Thermal Con Compound

Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Surround 5.1 PRO

Gigabit Lan & Wireless Intel Advanced-N 6230 3Mbps + Bluetooth

Both are about the simular price tag and there are some thing I can change as I am unsure about them these include:

Processor: Is there much noticable difference between the Intel Core i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2860QM(2.5GHz) 8MB and the Intel Core i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2760QM(2.4GHz) 6MB that it would signifficantly change my gaming experience?

Ram: Again I am unsure of the difference between the 8GB Kingston Hyper-X Genesis 1600Mhz SODIMM DDR3 and the 16GB Samsung 1333 SODIMM DDR3 Memory? The Kingston may be half the amount but runs much faster than the samsung, is this correct?

Graphics: I have seen the benchmark results from this and common sense tells me a SLI setup should be much better but again I am unsure and would like a little guidence, the 580M is a fast card with great performance but would the extra gig of GRAM really be superior, as experience tells me that its not always the higher amount is best, though i am no expert hence why I am here :)

As for the amount of storage, this is not too important and I am thinking that I may save a few bob by going for a smaller HD, I would of liked a SSD as they are so fast but this would definately make it cost too much.

I hope this hasnt been too long winded and I am looking forward to your replies and advice, I will be ordering something one way or the other before the xmas deadline :)

Regards
Madie

hi, im not a expert but i think the 1600mhz ram is better for video rendering and there isnt much noticeable difference in normal browsing speeds. as for gpu i cant help as i still need help myself. probably shouldn't post this as someone else will just say im wrong and provide better info but what the hell. hope you get a good laptop with w/e you opt for :)

Firstly, there is no point getting the 1600mhz ram, you won't notice the difference so you might as well save the money. Grahpics card wise, 2x560 is more powerful than a 580. The 580 is probably the most powerful mobile graphics card on the Market so you won't go wrong there. Finally the processor, you won't notice any difference between the two especially for gaming as a CPU isn't important, the gpu is. The only upgrade inwouod do is to put in an ssd, this will boost your performance no end. You will need to pick a screen size, that is the main difference between the two. If you could give me a budget and a screen size, I will draw you up a spec. Best of luck!!!

both look good, the viper III will probably perform a bit better though, unless you need surround sound, id drop the sound card not really necessary

Thank you for the quick replies so far

At the moment my budget for now is between 1600 and 1700 though I can push a little more for something good as it is xmas soon! As for screen size I have no ideal preference so either of the 2 is good, the viper was apealing for the option of the sli setup, as like you say the graphics card was the main component. Also the better sound card can be dropped as that is more of a luxury than a need.

would there be any issues regarding overheating or would that be covered by the great build from pc specialist.

Many thanks
Madie

I use my laptop (see specs in sig) for exactly the same purpose as yourself (i.e. HDvideo editing/rendering, 3D modelling, and Gaming). I would say definitely drop the 2860 and go for the 2760 as there is next to no difference in performance (but on hell of a difference in price), I would also monitor your current RAM usage on the your current machine whilst rendering videos, if you use more than 8GB then go for the 16GB 1333MHz RAM (I personally use about 13.3GB on average when rendering a HD video). If would also opt for the GTX580M as it is one hell of a card and it runs very cool.

this theory is completely wrong, programs adapt theirselves to the amount of RAM up until they reach their maximum, therefore if he is currently using 4GB and it shows up 3.5gb, it doesnt mean he should just stick to 4GB

Ok, looks like preference is going to be screen size, if you aren't fussed, go for the viper as it is more powerful and would be better for gaming. For the viper, it is a shade over your budget but isn't too bad, hope you aren't on the move too much or if you are, you have some serious biceps!!! Anyway here is the viper spec:

If you don't think you can handle the bigger laptop, this is what you will need for a 17.3" in one. The price difference is marginal but the performance will be much better on the viper due to the two graphics cards. So overall, go for the viper unless you can't handle the screen size in which case go for this one.
