looking to build my first gaming PC for around £600

hello, my name is George. I'm looking to build a gaming PC for around £600 (maybe a bit more) i am kind of new to the PC building world - so i don't know that much about components. ideally i want to have a i5 CPU (maybe a 2500k) And a graphics card that would run bf3 on mid - low at 60fps.

Can you help me out on this?
I also want to get into a bit of oveocking in later years
I just want a descent PC that will run most games on mid - high and some on mid - low.

The advice i seek is todo with the motherboard as a pc is based on that, i need to make sure that all components including the case will be compatible with the motherboard. CPU, as i said i would like to have a i5 2500k which is the best for gaming and a good graphics card i.e Nivida GTX 470 or a Nivida GTX 560?
the Ram i want is around 8gb maybe 6gb but again - need advice.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for being a N00B

Hi George,
Are you planning to buy it from PCS? Do you need an OS? For your budget I'd consider an AMD cpu not to compromise on other components like the gpu or hdd.

Hi, i have a OS already (win7 ultimate 64) and i don't want to buy a ready made PC i want to build my own - do you mean components?

I meant if you spend too much on the cpu (i5 intel) you may have less money available within your budget to spend on your graphics card for instance.

thanks for that! but i want to build my own - you know not build by someone :)
Then there you are,buy the components and off you go.:)
I doubt if it will save you much though and you'll be missing out on the great customer support provided by PCS.
But if it's for learning purposes, fair play.

Fair play as I said, but for overclocking you would really need to upgrade the CPU cooler on my spec and also the possibly the CPU to something like the i5 K version.

I think what you're looking for is the TomsHardware forums. As helpful as these forums are, you're only really going to get advice on parts that PCS use as people aren't going to advertise parts that are potentially PCS's competitor's. I added up the value of parts building my own PC on amazon compared to the cost of my rig custom built from PCS and honestly, the custom built one was cheaper than me building my own. I still don't know if it's purely down to PCS's buying power or because they use a limited range of products so I might have looked at cheaper alternatives if I'd been self-building.

What I will say is that I highly recommend using PCS instead of home building. I think it's now a false mindset that building your own is cheaper and unless you're purely doing it for the experience then there isn't much point. I considered building my own just to give me some knowledge and to be able to say I'd done it but I don't look at my PC now and think "Oh my jeez, I don't have a clue how that all went together or how my pc even switches on".

I spent £1015 on my rig. My friend is currently self building and he's spent £600 up to now. We have the same processor and ram but he's yet to buy a Graphics card, Power supply (one he wants is £125), Operating system or hard drives. He thinks mine was ridiculously expensive but I've told him by the time he's finished we're going to be pretty much identical price wise.

But back to the point, I'd take vanthus's build and just customise it to your needs. It's a good platform to start on and if there's anything you're unsure on you might just need to trawl through some reviews!
