Loud sound coming from what seems to be the GPU

Not sure if anyone here would be able to help me with identifying if this issue is coil whine or something worse?

My understanding was that coil whine is quite high pitched - this seems to me more like...well I am not sure, sounds like a rattle or metal grinding.

This only really kicks in when playing games, but Elder Scrolls Online & Destiny 2 seem to be very, very audible.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I thought it sounded a bit off! Oddly, it was practically silent for the first day or so then suddenly started making this awful noise lol.

Sounds like the graphics card fans are dodgy to me. Had something very similar occur years ago. GPU issues seem to be a theme at the moment on this forum.

Yeah I had noticed that actually - I do wonder if the manufacturers are actually refurbing broken graphics cards and pretending they are new, as clearly not everyone is having the same problems with the same cards. Annoying, but at least it does work until PCS get back to me with where we go from here.

PCS don’t use refurbished parts, they‘re all new

I don't think he was suggesting that. I think he was wondering whether the card manufacturers are 'refurbishing' cards and sending them to PCS as new cards.

I think that's unlikely though, there would be gevto pay if it got out - as it surely would.

I'm wondering whether the global shortage of components means that some corners are being cut in the factories to get products out the door faster?

Ah, gotcha... no, if they were caught the penalties would be humongous, wouldn’t be in their interest.

Yeah sorry definitely wasnt accusing PCS of anything here as the whole process has been awesome.

Was just wondering if the shortages could have caused Nvidia to cut corners but I know it's very unlikely!

I'm just unlucky lol just wanted to know if this was expected or not, and seems not!

Failures do happen and usually early on, it’s certainly not the norm, but it’s not unusual either. If you contact PCS they should be able to send a replacement next day for you to fit rather than having to send back the whole pc.

Yeah they've kind if suggested that - never done it before though, so no idea how to do it and the thought does make me a bit nervous haha

I'd definitely prefer 5 minutes talking through it rather than the hassle sending it back to be done (as I'm sure it still crazy busy). Glad to hear it's not as difficult as I built it up to be 😂

Yeah, you'll be surprised how easy it is, with most PC hardware in fact, it really is more similar to lego than anything electrical, and it's quite infectious once you get over the fear :)

No problem, let us know when you've got it and well talk you through it.

I have a similar issue. I recieved my PC on Saturday from pCSpecialist. and was fine, until I noticed a rattling sound (I guess from one of the fans), I haven't done anything too strenious with the computer yet, and the rattle mainly starts after the computer has been on for a little while.

Video with noise (sorry may be a little on the quiet side):

Clearly hear it. Sounds like something Is hitting the fan or the whole fan is bumping somehow. Weird. Sorry to hear about that.

Whilst I fully appreciate PCS are flat out trying to keep up with demand I have noticed a fair few people over the past couple of days having issues with their machines. I know things can happen in transit and issues do arise but I guess that what I am trying to say is I hope that due to the increase in workload everyone's machine is still get a good quality control. I would gladly wait an extra day or two if it meant eradicating a fault.

You'll find these forums are primarily for troubleshooting, but it's a huge minority of customers that will ever come to the forums at all. They rarely come to sing praises, more usually to troubleshoot issues.

It wasn't a criticism, and I absolutely agree. People are quick to complain but not so much to compliment, that's the way of the world unfortunately. Just with the volume of work PCS are getting through I would imagine the chances of some easily resolvable issues slipping through the net are higher at the minute. Of course I could be completely wrong.

No, I do think you're right. With the pandemic, the orders for any IT equipment including things like webcams, laptops, pc's, mice and keyboards, almost anything IT related, has gone through the roof.

On top of the increased demand, there are the social distancing guidelines that businesses have to follow which PCS have done by splitting the team into 2 shifts I believe.

PCS have seen a huge demand uptick and as such have made a lot of new hirings to cope with it, they've expanded quite a lot.

The downside of this is that you have some newer staff members who aren't so thoroughly trained and there have been some mistakes happening that normally wouldn't be let through, that's without question.

It's a difficult load to balance. We're trying to feedback as soon as we pick up on a trend of issues appearing so that they can feed that back to the teams and help with targetted training.

Totally and that's why this forum is crucial. The help I have received in putting together a system that was the absolute best for my budget has been nothing short of 1st class. Yourself, Scott and Nurse have been an absolute Godsend and personally I don't think I would have got better help/advice in a shop. Cheers again Gents.
