M.2 SSD install help

Good morning,

I have recently purchased an additional M.2SSD for my PC which I ordered from sometime last year, and when I was trying to screw it in I found out that the screw slots in the motherboard are much too small for any screws I currently have in my possession. I scrounged throughout the box the PC came in but I could not find any spare screws for the motherboard.

Please tell me if i am being dumb or missing something obvious, i have attached a photo fo what i am on about.

Kind regards,

I'm struggling a little to see what's going on there. What motherboard do you have?

There's a particular kind of screw (helpfully called an M.2 screw) that should fit. But normally it would come in a package with the PC, or possibly already in one of the screw holes/standoffs for the M.2 slot (there are several holes because M.2 drives can be different sizes).

Don't try to use anything but the correct screw. If you can't find the one you should have, buy a new one. They're very cheap.

Hi,
The motherboard is a ASUS® ROG STRIX Z390-F GAMING: ATX, LGA1151, USB 3.1, SATA 6GBs - RGB Ready,
What size screw would be best for said M.2 slots in it, they seem rather small, maybe a milimeter in size, sorry if the image is not clear but what is shown on there is one of the holes where a screw would fit to hold the M.2 in place, i am holing up a screw up for size comparison.
Kind regards,

The screw would normally already be in the board I would have thought.

Can you take a photo from a bit farther out so we can see the M2 lane as a whole?

It will be a tiny M2 screw in the bag of surplus screws that came in the welcome box. It would have been one small plastic bag with just 2 screws in.

If you don't have that box, then you can get a batch from Amazon that contain Asus M2 screws, can't promise they'll work without knowing more details on the exact screw type they use, but it does state it's specifically for Asus boards and does have M2 screws.

Or

I guess it is worth a shot, i'm just looking at the screws on the amzon links and they seem larger than the holes in the motherboard, but then again i can't be sure. I'll order them and hopefully they'll fit.

They are actually really small. I've just disassembled my M.2 caddy to take a picture of the screw. USB Type A plug for scale.
