Using the Intel Extreme Tuning utility the reading for the CPU core temp is approx 69 degrees and goes up to 96 degrees performing a 1 min stress test.

Are these temps normal?

It's warm and toasty but you don't normally perform stress tests so it's all relative I'd say!

Does the CPU run hot when you use your laptop normally??

Been surfing the web since post above and also raised the back of the laptop to give some air and temp is now at 55 degrees with cpu running at approx 1-3%.

Hoovered out recently, will get a can of air from shop tomorrow and give it a blow out.

Do these laptop cooling bases work with the fans in them?

They certainl help but they will only make a couple of degrees of difference. Still worth getting imo

Got my self a cooling pad and a tin of compressed air.

Removed the back cover, blown out and cleaned the fans with a brush.

Temps after 1.5 hours or surfing web, installing updates on graphics card and temps are as follows.
Max 61
Min 39
Avg 45

Seems to have a difference, same stress test now at 72 degrees.

Must have been a bit of gunk somewhere, maxing at 72 for a stress test is incredibly good.

Took an old laptop apart a few months ago and you should have seen how much dust there was inside. One of the fans was jammed because of a massive chunk of dust. It was so thick and matted you could pick it up and throw it around. :D
