Multi GPU advice

Hi all,

Im looking to get a machine with as much GPU oomph as possible, while still being stable.
The purpose of the machine would be for 3D rendering (Octane and Redshift), so the GPU/s is the main importance for this build.

The budget is around £5K.
I was looking at the following spec:

3960X 24 core Threadripper
Whatever motherboard will work really
2 x 2080Ti
64GB or 128GB Ram
1TB M2 Hard Drive

My questions are:

- We've got a Titan XP lying around at work here and I was thinking of putting that into the system too if possible?
- How many GPUs can I squeeze into a box?

Im happy to take pointers and change anything up if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks for any advice...

ps, SLI won't be required

Depends on the size of the box and the motherboard PCIe slot placement I guess.

And the size of the graphics cards i.e. whether those 2080 tis are dual or triple slotters.

This is one where PCS's configurators aren't very helpful sadly.

If you try to spec up a threadripper system with 3 GPUs, it insists all 3 GPUs must be the same model, which of course for Octane rendering they do not. However, the 3rd and 4th GPU menus only include the Quadros and AMD workstation cards - not 2080 ti GPUs. And those are all dual slotters whereas the 2080 tis PCS use may be 2.5/3 slots. So the configurator is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot there.

There are 4 motherboards. The ASUS® PRIME TRX40-PRO and ASUS® ROG STRIX TRX40-E GAMING we can rule out because of the PCIe x16 slot placement - you won't be able to fit any 3 GPUs in if they are dual slot.

The Zenith and the Gigabyte have the same PCIe x16 slot layout (as far as I can tell), and either should fit the same GPUs.

I believe that even if the 2080 tis from PCS are 2.5/3 slotters, you should be able to have 2 of them and your Titan XP. e.g. 2080 ti in the top slot, your Titan XP in the 3rd slot and 2080 ti (2-3 slots) in the 4th (lowest) x16 slot. Something like that.

I'm not sure whether the top PCIe slot lines up with the 1st or the 2nd PCIe bracket in the PC case. I think it might line up with the 2nd bracket. However as long as the case has 8 PCIe brackets, that should still be fine.

I'd suggest the 750D and its 9 PCIe brackets (which if nothing else hopefully means a smidge of space under the bottom GPU). There's also the Fracal XL R2, but the only AIO water coolers on sale with the Threadripper CPUs are 360mm and the case doesn't support them... only 240, maybe 280 depending on the radiator...

The Cooler Master Wraith Ripper is okay
but if you have 3 GPUs in there as well an AIO seems all but necessary.
