My 9 year old Core 2 Duo wont start up

As the title says my first PC specialist PC has stopped working, while I don't use it anymore as I have replaced it I did let my dad have the system and was working until the other day where it made a funny noise and went off.

It won't switch on now I get audio from it when you switch power on and the motherboard (Asus P5B) has a flashing green light but when I press the power button it does not do anything else. I did get a call from PC specialist a few years ago I believe (my dad answered the phone) asking if the PC was working. I suspect a faulty motherboard as my friend had the same P5B and his broke so it could lead to some design flaw I guess with the motherboard.

The annoying thing about this is not that it broke, I got great value from the PC over 9 years which is the longest time I have bothered with any system, as I replace them faster than that. But that it happened before I purchased my new PC which I have put my order in today, as I intend to give my dad my current PC which is 6 years old now to replace the current one.

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas on what it could be? when I searched online the gist was it could either be the motherboard or power supply

Hey

I would say if your system has been running fine for 9 years, that's pretty solid :) Especially if you have overclocked your CPU, then the life expectancy of that CPU would be as low as 5 years, while higher quality motherboards last up to 10 years without any issues. It actually pays off investing in a solid motherboard + PSU.

Nevertheless, you can start isolating the issue by disconnecting all non-essential parts for the POST to complete. That means you should only leave 1 DIMM installed, no PCI Cards, no hard-drives, Optical drives, etc. Also disconnect the graphics card and use the onboard graphics card instead, should that option be available. Clear CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard while you are at it. Alternatively, simply remove the CMOS Battery for 30 secs and install it again. Also try and reseat the ATX power cables on the motherboard. If it still doesn't work and the error remains the same, then we can definitely be sure it's either PSU or Motherboard related. 50/50 :)
