Hi guys.

I thought I'd post a comprehensive review about my PCS experience with some tips that may help anyone considering purchasing a computer, and also a review of the desktop PC that I just bought and received.

I've laid this review out in 2 posts. The first post is all about the experience and what to expect. The second post is about the computer, what comes with it and how it is setup and pictures!

I hope this will be of use to you and please feel free to ask me any questions or if you want more information about my computer and i'll be happy to help

Part 1: The PCS Experience

My situation

I currently own an 8 year old alienware computer. It has been mighty powerful and a pleasure to use but it is now starting to show its age, so I felt it was time to take that step to buy a new computer. When I bought my alienware they were an excellent company and felt quite like what PC Specialist are like now. Their support was excellent and the product quality with custom cases at the time were excellent. I decided not to purchase another alienware as they’ve now been bought up by dell, their prices have gone up even higher than they were before (and they weren’t too cheap back then) and the customisability of them are rubbish now.

Having looked around at different PC companies I decided on PC Specialist as they have a good website, excellent reviews all over the internet and great customisation options. (A lot like alienware used to be)

The Ordering Process

The PCS website is very well laid out and easy to understand for the beginner up to the advanced user. There are plenty of customisation options and useful explanation tabs for all components so you really know what you are getting. Prices are competitive and good value for money. (There are other cheaper companies but their reviews aren’t as good, also you could consider building yourself and it would be cheaper (I thought about it) but I wanted the 3yr support so opted on PC specialist)

The actual ordering process was quick and painless. Its worth noting that PCS (like many other system builders) charge 2% extra for credit card payments, though that was a cost I was willing to take with the increased security and protection it provides.

During the ordering process I had called and emailed PCS a few times. What I would say is that they are all very nice helpful people and really know their stuff. The caveat to that is that I would recommend phoning rather than emailing as I found when emailing I would only get very brief answers to my questions and sometimes it felt as though they didn’t completely answer the question I was asking (probably because they have so many people emailing them so have to get through them quickly) However when you call them they really do go that extra mile and try to help you get the best value for money for your needs.

HINT 1: When purchasing look out for coupon codes. There are usually £15 discount vouchers about in PC magazines and online. After visiting the website I seemed to get a targeted ad from PCS with a discount code whilst I was reading a technology website….so keep a look out!
The agonising production process

This is probably the worst bit! The wait. I had to wait 9 working days for my computer (in reality about 2 weeks) and like any purchase you are excited about you will go on the PCS website multiple times a day to check the status of your order!

PCS keep you updated with any changes in status of the stage of your order with an email. They will also send a generic email after about 6-7 days saying they haven’t forgotten about you and that it is usual to wait that long. My order times were as follows:

Processed Date 22-11-2012
Pre-Production Date 27-11-2012
Build Date 30-11-2012
Test Date 04-12-2012
QC Date 04-12-2012
Awaiting Dispatch Date 05-12-2012
Dispatch Date 05-12-2012

There have been some reports of people not being told when there were stock issues etc. Its always worth giving them a call if you are concerned as they have more information on their computers about what is holding your order up. In that respect their website doesn’t divulge as much information as it could. Again probably better to call rather than email as you will tend to wait a couple of days for an email response.

Delivery

I have mixed feelings about DPD for my order. Once your PC has despatched PCS will send you an email and text with your tracking number and day your computer will be arriving. You are then given an option if you aren’t available to get it sent to a neighbour, or choose a different day. On the morning of your delivery you should get another text giving you an hour timeframe in which they will come and deliver. This is pretty good if you’ve got someone at home or you’ve taken the day off.

I wasn’t able to be at home for my delivery so I thought it would be better to pick up the delivery from the depot. I tried calling the number on the email/text/website for dpd, don’t bother, it’s an extremely irritating automated telephone line where there are no options to speak to an operator.
I called the depot directly to try and be helpful to tell them not to bother to attempt delivery and just to leave it at the depot so I could pick it up myself later. I was told this isn’t possible and that a driver has to attempt delivery. She did try and see if the driver could go to my house last to delivery my parcel, but he said no. Fair enough. I then called again on the day of my delivery to the depot to ask if I could pick up my parcel on the day and they said yes, and said to come at 6pm as the driver is due to do his last delivery at 3pm and be back by 5pm.

This is where the frustration began. I arrived at 6pm and had to wait ONE HOUR at the depot until my parcel came. To make matters worse a rude member of staff came up to me after I had been waiting patiently for an hour without making a fuss and had a go at me saying I should call beforehand and make a booking if I wanted to collect. When I said to him that I did call 2 times and was told to come there he just rudely said “well we haven’t got anything written down here” and didn’t even apologise. I nearly lost it (and I’m normally very calm) but luckily at that point another member of staff came with my computer!

Now one thing I wasn’t expecting was JUST HOW LARGE THE COMPUTER BOX IS. I tried every possible way to fit it in my car and it just couldn’t get in. In the end I had to do my unboxing in a dark DPD depot outside!! I took the computer and put it in the back seat, with the peripherals box in the boot!!

HINT 2: If you need to speak to DPD about your parcel please call the following customer services number that will get you to an operator 01215002500. Also if you want a depot specific number see the following website: http://www.goneboarding.co.uk/forum/dpd-depot-list/threadid/31297/showthread.aspx

HINT 3: Unless you have a massive hatchback car DO NOT COLLECT YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE DEPOT. The box is absolutely huge and will only fit in a van! I had to open my box outside and put everything in parts in my car, something which I regretted at the time!!

Part 2: My New computer

Packaging

Blimey is this thing well packaged. The box is absolutely huge. When you open it the top box is one which contains your welcome box and peripherals. Then underneath is your PC which is surrounded by a polystyrene foam. The inside of the actual PC has a moulded foam protective package to protect the components during transit. There is a clear instruction to remove this from inside your PC before you start to use it!
HINT 1: Make sure you check that all components in your computer are seated correctly and not damaged during the delivery process.

What Brands are the “non-specific” components in your computer?

Some of the things you buy are branded on the website e.g. the processor will be an intel, the motherboard will be a specific asus. There are a few things that aren’t specified, namely because PCS vary the brands they use at any one time. The following are the branded components I received in my machine for this:

Graphics Card on site: NVIDIA Geforce 680 4gb = Palit Jetstream 4gb NVIDIA Geforce 680
DVD-RW Drive: ATAPI iHAS124
Blu-ray RW: Pioneer BDR-207D

Similarly the PCS website says you will get DVD authoring and playback software:

DVD Burning software: Nero 10 Multimedia Suite Essentials
DVD Playback software: PowerDVD 10

Unfortunately both of these are incompatible with Windows 8. I have contacted PCS regarding this and awaiting a response, as really we should be sent software that can run with the latest operating system.

What comes in the welcome pack

In the welcome pack come a variety of goodies. This is what was in my box:

1. Power cord
2. Driver CDs (ASUS motherboard, Geforce drivers)
3. DVD Authoring/Playback software (PowerDVD 10, Nero 10 multimedia suite essentials)
4. Manuals for internal components (case, motherboard, powersupply, some stickers)
5. PC Specialist manual (A very comprehensive guide to your computer and reinstalling windows for beginners….useful if you are not very familiar with computers)
6. Corsair bag with modular power supply cables
7. ASUS sabertooth motherboard bay covers (on the motherboard I get there are dust covers for the pci express slots, theses were included with the accessories, however it would have been nice for them to put these in the motherboard during building rather than leave them in the box!)
8. Case front bay covers (I had requested this, i.e. the front covers they remove when putting your dvd drives in…..they usually throw these away, but I wanted them incase I remove a drive later….and they were happy to give me them
9. Corsair Graphite 600T case mesh side panel (my case comes with a side window which is interchangeable with a mesh, which they also provided (though I did request it too))
10. DVI to HDMI + DVI to VGA converters for graphics card
11. Excess screws for cases

My case review

I bought the Corsair Graphite 600T White case. I wanted a case that looked elegant yet professional and this one really fits the bill. Its one of the higher priced cases around the £150 mark but it is well worth it. It has a premium quality to it, is a good size and lots of upgradability. It comes with two massive fans and the front fan has a white led light which looks very nice!

It has a screwless entry to the side panels which is great and all the drive bays are also toolless which makes things so easy. Plenty of room inside for good ventilation and it all looks top notch quality.

Regarding front panel there are 4 USB 2.0 ports, 1 firewire, 1 usb 3.0 (very useful!) a fan controller and headphone/microphone ports. So well stocked for front access.

One thing worth noting is that the front USB 3.0 doesn’t go to a header on the motherboard. It instead goes all the way to the back of the computer to take up one of your USB 3.0 ports, which is a bit of a pain but luckily the sabertooth motherboard has plenty of usb ports on the back (partly why I bought it)

One drawback was that this case, like most newer cases has no 3.5inch front bays. I wanted an internal memory card reader so had to buy a 3.5 to 5.25inch converter and installed it myself once I received the computer. (Not really a problem)

I would highly recommend this case!

What if you don’t buy an operating system from PCS??

I didn’t buy an operating system with my computer. I always planned on installing windows 8 onto this system, and at the moment windows 8 pro upgrade is only £25. If you buy the same with the computer its £109! Most people who buy a computer are replacing an older computer, so just use the product code from your old computer, and download the windows 8 upgrade online and do a clean install.

When you buy a computer without the operating system PCS will send you a computer with an evaluation copy of windows 7 already preinstalled. You will be able to use it for 30 days and then either buy and insert a licence key or install the operating system you want.
I just inserted my old windows 7 licence key in and then did a clean install of windows 8 pro upgrade on top of that.

HINT: Remember that windows 7 home edition has a RAM limit of 16gb. So if you have more than that you either need to get windows 7 pro/ultimate or any version of windows 8

First Impressions of the computer

I’ve only had it just over a day but I’m already really impressed. It was built well, the cable management was immaculate and tidy. My my does it run quiet, my alienware was a noisy beast in comparison. It is blisteringly fast and does anything I ask it to with ease. I haven’t played any games on it yet so can’t comment on that.

PCS installed all the latest drivers for the computer (motherboard, graphics etc) which I was very happy about.

The only thing I’m not so impressed with is the onboard sound from the motherboard. (Realtek audio) as it is not playing my 5.1 sound properly and the quality is far worse than my previous Creative Audigy 2 ZX platinum pro sound card. This is not a problem as I am waiting delivery of the soundblaster ZX soundcard next week.

The SSD hard disk is a definite advantage. It is so fast its crazy, and USB 3.0 devices are also another level!!

I’m so far very impressed with windows 8 and would recommend it to anyone buying a new computer. I was a big fan of windows 7 but windows 8 runs faster for me and I’m surprised by the number of “apps” already available for it. Now I would say some of the modern UI app defaults are irritating, and you need to change them back to your desktop versions. The “search” is also appauling. I highly recommend the Start8 program to bring back the start bar. It makes the desktop interface just like windows 7 and is only 4.50 dollars! Well worth it.

The only other problem I’ve had is that my mouse (a Logitech MX revolution) has lag and stutter issues when connected to the back USB 2.0 ports. If I put the blutooth receiver in the front usb 2.0 or the back USB 3.0 ports it works fine. Bit puzzling why that happens.

Overall opinions of PCS

Good:
1. Great customer service when you call them. Staff are very friendly and helpful. They do go the extra mile to try and help out. When I asked to buy their £4 memory card reader after I placed my order (as I found a 3.5inch to 5.25inch converter and decided to fit it myself) they decided to throw it in for free. That was really nice of them.
2. Great range of components to customise your computer.
3. Good regular email updates regarding change in status of your order
4. Delivery service (if you happen to be at home) seems to be efficient and package was undamaged.
5. Great quality PCs!
6. No bloatware on your PC
7. All OEM manuals and parts included with your PC

Bad
1. 0844 telephone number. In this day and age having this “lo-call” chargable number is a bit cheeky. Most phone providers give 0845/0870 numbers free mins but not 0844. Also with them only being open during office hours a lot of people can’t call them from work apart from with their mobile when the charges are then astronomical! (though in their defence the waiting time to speak to them is usually a few minutes at most)
2. Bundled DVD/Blu-ray software is not compatible with windows 8 (am awaiting response with them about this)
3. No 5.25inch memory card readers available directly. They could offer these or an installation option with a converter bay to install 3.5inch reader.

Right I think i've rambled on enough. Hope that might help someone. If anyone has anyone they want to ask about the experience or my computer please feel free and i'll try my best. If theres anything you want to specifically see or know please reply to the thread.

I've enclosed some pics below. (sorry if theyre not great quality.)
