My computer shuts down

Hi, I had bought my Desktop PC back in mid-Summer, but since last week, it just shuts downs or goes dormant, leaving the lights on inside the pc.

I did update the drivers from using GIGABYTE.

Here is my specs:

Is there any reason you used Gigabyte to update your drivers and not just run Windows Update? Were you missing some drivers or something?

Have you monitored temperatures at all.

Have you checked that the sleep mode settings havent been changed so its actually the machine going to sleep after a period of inactivity ?

What are you doing when the PC goes dormant / shuts down?

Hi, it is because the drivers weren't showing for drivers updates through Windows and I had only found out that Gigabyte was able into install them

Yes when I had checked last weekend it was showing at 100° sometime after starting up.

It had only been changed last Sunday (to do a hard drive scan and Windows Defender Scan), which was after when the issue of the Desktop shutting down started.

I have started using UE5 template plugin, it seems to run ok from a clean template, but on the first build which usually takes long, it shuts down on that. It even had shut down on a full scan of Windows Defender, yet it can only do partial scans per hard drive?

Where were you looking?

When you say it shuts down, do you mean a BSOD or just loses power? Or does it state it’s signing you out and shutting down windows?

Most likely loses power, I haven't seen the BSOD happening at all. It happens while in the middle of creating a new UE5 project.

When it shuts down, the interior light of the desktop computer stays on.

And drivers? How were you trying to install them before resorting to the gigabyte updater?

I didn't, I didn't even have a way until last week.

I know there's finding them through matching the components on the website, but it's hard finding that the time at the moment

Drivers would have already been fully configured as you bought the machine with windows.

So it was already completely setup, all you needed to do was run windows update.

Unfortunately the gigabyte updater is known to cause issues.

I would suggest a clean install and start from scratch. Drivers are installed through optional updates component of windows update.

It would be wroth checking temps as well under a stress test with cinebench. While that cooler is a suitable size for the processor, the pumps just aren’t able to circulate as much coolant as a premium corsair and so are driven a lot harder.

Yeah, but the issue still remains, I had still started before even using Gigabyte to install the driver updates.

The computer shutting down started last Tuesday week then I used Gigabyte to install the update during last weekend.

Yes, but you can do any troubleshooting on a compromised OS as it introduces unknown variables that may contribute to the issue that you can’t account for.

So you need to know the OS is clean before you can start troubleshooting

So how can I do this?
Normal clean install

Download a new copy of Windows using the Media Creation Tool to an 8GB (min) USB.
Boot that USB and choose a Custom Install.
Delete all UEFI partitions on the system drive (EFI System, Recovery, MSR Reserved, Primary).
Select the unallocated space that results and click the Next button. The installer will create the correct partitions and install Windows.
Run Windows Update repeatedly, even across reboots, until no more updates are found. This includes optional updates which are your system drivers.
You may need/want to download and install the latest graphics driver from the Nvidia/AMD website (they change so regularly the latest version isn't always in the Windows libraries).

Would I need to back up my files as well?
Only if you have any on the C drive, but you should never store any data on the C drive anyway, it should all be on the secondary drive which you don't need to touch.

And even better it should be backed up to somewhere such as onedrive or dropbox
 
Looks like it may be an overheating issue to me.

Please download HWMonitor (free) and post a screenshot of the CPU temps and the GPU temp both at idle and at the biggest load you can put on it.

Hi Ubuysa,

CPU is overheating

The cooler has likely failed, you can RMA it as it's still in warranty, but I would strongly suggest upgrading the cooler to at least a Corsair H100i, you really want an H115i on that CPU.
