My new GTX 470 is showing up as a GTX 465

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has encountered this before.

I bought a new GTX 470 (not from PC Specialist) to go with my current GTX 470, after installing though it is showing up as a lower spec GTX 465 (less onboard memory etc). The weird thing though is that rather than having 352 cuda cores as the 465 should it's showing 448 cores like the GTX 470. The extra cuda cores are what I'm after, I'm not too bothered about SLI.

So I'm not really sure what's going on with it. Do you think someone has owned the card before and flashed the firmware/drivers to unlock the extra cores? Could it be a factory mistake?

The card came all packaged up as a GTX 470 and the stickers on the card say it's a 470 so I'm a bit stumped really. The make is a ASUS ENGTX470

Any help/advice would be grateful, thanks in advance.
Chris.

Did you get the card from a reputable retailer? How are you checking the details? im presuming your original 470 is showing the correct details?

If your using some sort of free hardware checker it could be a mistake, but i presume your original 470 is showing up correctly?

Hi mantadog, well it's the first time I've bought from them ballicom.co.uk they had 100's of good customer feedback on Amazon but I guess it's always bit of a risk with companies like this.

Yeah it's showing up as a 465 in Nvidia Control panel, Device Manager, when I let Nvidia scan my computer for drivers it brought up that I had a 470 and 465 and the rendering software I use called Octane is bringing it up as a 465 as well.

Bit of a wierd one really. I think it is definately a 465, I've not heard back from Ballicom yet.

Thanks for the reply.
Chris.

A long shot, but see if the serial numbers are on the card, if so e-mail asus, with a subject such as "i think i've been sold a fake 470" they may be able to check if it is a 470 or not.

Well with so many different apps showing it as a 465 then it looks like you might have got yourself a 465. Wait and see what they said (if they even bother to reply) could be some sort of mistake, hard to see how with it being covered in GTX 470 stickers.

Was it sold as new in original packaging etc? I just did a quick google on the name and found a couple of stories but nothing that seemed to catch my eye more than you get with any other online retailer. Some from 2-3 years ago about items being advertised cheap then when you buy them your order is mysteriously cancelled (seemed to be just to draw you ino their site) Other than that not alot.

Let us know how you get on.

Hey thanks for the replies guys.

That's a good point about the serials, I'll see if the one's on the box match the one's on the card itself. Yeah it was sold as new and came with everything you would expect.

I'm guessing it's been done on purpose to sell it as a 470 or it could possibly be a mistake with ASUS themselves, perhaps someone just put the wrong stickers on when it was made...

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers guys! Hey that's a good point Tom, didn't think about delivery costs!

They HAVE to refund both sending it out to you and sending it back to them, I'd use recorded just to make sure they receive it. Don't want them telling fibs saying it was never revived.

Ah right. They have parcel force picking it up themselves so I just need to check that they debit me with the full amount including delivery.

Cheers Tom.
