My spec...you decide! 😎

Hi guys,

New member here, so please be gentle! 😉

Planning on switching to PC gaming (from Xbox Series X) and boy how times have moved on since I last built a PC.

Monitor - LG 27GL850-B running at 1440p 144hz (I‘ve preordered the Spectrum Eve 4K 144hz monitor but may cancel as I’m not sure I need it)
Uses - Primarily gaming (FPS shooters i.e. CoD, Warzone, Battlefield etc - although maybe some Minecraft to help me chill out after dying too often)
Budget - Ideally I’d like to spec something up for c.£2k, but would consider going just over if needed

I’m struggling to know where to start, even just choosing a case looked like a challenge, but have in my mind settled on AMD Ryzen CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070/3080 GPU...but what would you do if it were your money?

Thanks for taking the time to read, and (hopefully) for your suggestions.

Here’s how I’d run with it. The 3060Ti would bring the price down a touch more, the 3070 is if you want 1440p 144Hz with all guns blazing 👍

Wow that was quick, appreciate the fast response! ...and yes all guns blazing (or at least those within my budget) but is there any value/longevity in upgrading to the 3080, or would there be no benefit against the rest of the spec/my monitor?

the 3080 is really designed for 4K gaming so in your case the 3070 would be incredible and the 3060TI would do the job perfectly

Ok got it so if I’m trying to future proof for 4k, and if I don’t cancel the Spectrum Eve 4K 144hz monitor, the 3080 might be a logical upgrade. Would any additional changes to the spec be worthwhile if I get carried away and plump for that (despite it going over my originally intended budget).

Also, what’s the thinking behind 2 SDDs as well as the main storage drive? 🤔

1 of the M.2 SSD (the samsung) is for your OS, the 1TB PCS M.2 is for your games to go on, then the HDD is for general storage of stuff that doesn't require high speeds. This way if you ever have to reinstall the OS you don't have to reinstall all your games

My apolgies, didn't see the 4K monitor pre-order. Yes, going for a 3080 would be a good logical upgrade but the current wait times are through the roof, a lot of people are on 80-90 working day waiting times. If you're unsure if you're going to need the 4K monitor, I'd keep the 3070 and the 1440p monitor.

1st SSD: for windows and windows only (if you had to re-install windows you won't loose a load of files, or applications you'd need to re-download)
2nd SSD For fast load time on games
1st storage driive: a HDD for general files as these generally don't need fast acces

If you really want the 3080 and don't want to wait 4 months, you could spec the system with a lower end GPU (currently the only option is a 1650 which will do 1080p 60fps just fine) and wait until prices have dropped and supply is larger then fit one then. Or you could spec the system with a 3080 and try and source your own. If you're successful, take the 3080 out the order. Or you could wait the 4 months 😂

But as I said, if you're unsure about the monitor, the 3080 won't be fully utilised so it's pointless paying more for a longer wait and unused performance.

Also if you have a separate drive for your operating system you can format it and reinstall windows without losing anything that may have been stored on the same drive its a godsend when you have a windows issue for it to be on its own drive !

It depends how long you want to wait for your build and when you might move to 4K. By the time you change the next generation of GPUs could be out and games may require more power for ray tracing, etc.

Thanks everyone for your input, greatly appreciated!

Maybe I save my money and just run with 1440p 144hz for the time being, but does anyone know what the availability of the 3070 is...it also says pre-order, however the build suggests 16 to 18 working days but I'm guessing that's standard text.

That is standard text judging from the 3080 thread and 3060ti threads the 3070 is a substantially lower wait time then the other cards tho nobody could give you answer on when your spec will go into build apart from pcs

As the peeps above have said, I believe the 3070 stocks are by far the best at the moment. It seems to be between a 1-2 month wait currently and some people have claimed as low as 19 working days! Again, there's no 100% date on when the PC is built but tracking the threads on here it should give you a rough idea.

Final question, as think I'm all set...but for the case!

Not sure how I feel about the lack of a rear exhaust fan, will that be an issue with over heating?
Would the Corsair iCue 465X RGB be everyone's recommendation, or if not which of the other available cases would you choose, as I'm drawn for some reason to the Fractical Meshify S2 Blackout tempered glass case.

The lack of a rear exhaust wouldn't be a huge issue, the AIO cooler will take the load. The Meshify is a lovely case, highly support that as an option. It's a big old chunk though, make sure you've got plenty of space for it!

Ok I'm converted (to the Corsair 500D SE), as I'm a bit of a sucker for keeping the RGB components aligned - and think this case comes with the Commander Pro module which I believe might make things easier to control/monitor?!

Here's my final spec, any thoughts before I place the order?
