Need advice for an off-the-shelf gaming PC

Great resource folks - thank you!

So, I'm in the UK and looking for a half-decent entry-level gaming PC for my avid-gamer (aren't they all!) son. He mostly plays Fortnite, WoW and Overwatch, and will of course be doing school work (so I'm assured!!).

I'm no PC builder, so just need something I can buy off the shelf with everything he needs to 'plug and play'. PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse and wifi-ready.

Budget is £800 max for the package.

Would appreciate any good offers that you good folks have seen around and about!

Thanks in advance!

As this is a PS Specialist owned forum, we could only pass comment on systems made by PCS. It’s against forum rules to promote competitors.

You are welcome to check PCS’s selection of pre-built systems and ask for forum user opinions 🙂👍

Ah, apologies - my bad :(

Well, as luck would have it, this is one PC I've seen - a PCS Vortex at Currys.

Any feedback on this for the price very much welcome.

There's a very similar pre-built available on the PCS website too...but it has a slightly better GPU and it's in a flashy RGB case...for the same £££.

VORTEX 175
  • Intel® Core™ i3-9100F
  • ASUS® H310-PLUS R2.0
  • 8GB Corsair VENGEANCE 2400MHz
  • 6GB GEFORCE GTX 1660
  • 512GB PCS SSD
  • 1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA HDD
  • Windows 10 Home
I suppose it depends whether you want a machine that's good enough for your current gaming requirements, which will need a complete rebuild to upgrade CPU/Motherboard/GPU/PSU in a year's time when you decide you want to play more demanding games.

You won't get much more for the money, but at least you'll save a few £££ towards a 1080p/1440p monitor, keyboard & mouse (although if you do order from PCS directly, remember to remove Bullguard AV trial option, as it's not very good and Windows built-in AV is much better).

Yes, it includes wi-fi:
  • WIRELESS INTEL® WI-FI 6 AX200 2,400MBPS/5GHZ, 300MBPS/2.4GHZ PCI-E CARD + BT 5.0
As for monitors, I assume it only 1080p gaming you're aiming for with this set-up, so you'll want a 144hz (or above) 1920x1080 monitor - something like the (currently unavailable on PCS) 23.6" MSI OPTIX MAG241CPUK

It's another £100 or so to go up to 27" in 1080/1440p.
