Need Buying advice for new laptop

Hi I have a budget of around £1000-1500, I am looking for a laptop with a minimum 15" screen. I am a student, so my main uses would be using office software and browsing I also spend most free time playing League of legends and Starcraft 2 so would be nice if it could handle those. I would occasionally like to take it to lectures and I am studying abroad hence why I am going for a laptop instead of a PC.

I was looking at the new dell xps 15 but they are expensive(for the hardware you get) and dell has the worst after sales support. A friend highly recommended PCS along with the rest of the internet so I'm hoping someone can recommend a good build.

Thanks in advance

That review Vortex is indeed top notch value. Though it might be slightly overkill for the games you mention. If you want to spend that much and get a nailed on laptop then go for the review. It's pretty hefty (big and heavy) to be lugging into lectures though. Battery isn't great either so spending a day at uni without a charging option may be a bit dicy.

I don't play those games but they're not particularly GPU intensive are they? Could probably function quite well with a 765m.

There's a 17" Optimus in the review section for £879 which would also probably suit your needs nicely and save you a packet.

If you're going to start playing modern graphically intensive games then go for the Vortex review that Cadwah recommended.

Though if I was lugging around a laptop all the time I would go for 15"

Id highly recommend a 14" for uni, should run LOL fine and a few other games. The new Ultranote 14 should be out soon, so I'm told. My 15.6 from PCS just seems a bit too big to carry round uni and I plan to sell it to get the Ultranote

Hey thanks very much for the input I'm veering towards a 15.6" model that cadwar recommended because its easier on my eyes (than 14"), cheaper and lighter. Do you have any ideas on how long battery life should last with just browsing and word processing on that?

The battery on my vortex lasts about 3hrs just browsing, you could probably get about the same. Be aware that if you go for the build I put up you get no optical drive as I had the SSD in there.

An alternative for £1100 and GTX 770m could be:

Just to clarify... the Vortex laptops are not cheaper and lighter than the ultranotes.

Agreed, they are BIG and they weigh a LOT, however due to their size the cooling is very good, which is important if you want your Laptop components to last.

I would not change my Vortex for anything, just get a high quality laptop backpack and carry it in that :D

See you on the Starcraft ladder sometime ;)

If you're going to be gaming online on the Laptop, you should consider the better wireless cards at least.

quick question will it come with windows 7 pre-installed because it doesn't have an optical disk drive?
Is it worth sticking with windows 7 or better to get windows 8 they are both the same price?
