Need mobile workstation for CAD and FEA

Hi all,

new here, directed here by a friend who had a good experience with pcspecialist so Im looking to see what they can do for me. As the title says I need a mobile workstation for engineering CAD packages like CATIA and Siemans NX and FEA packages. I have a great pc but need the mobility on top of what I have. looking around the £1800 mark,
where would be a good start? Has anyone here got something similar?

Hi
I have a Vortex 3 17inch specs in my signature. I'm a mechanical engineering student and run solidworks perfectly on it. Don't know if it's comparable to those programs you quoted but I'd presume a 680m or 7970m with an i7 would be fine. Mine cost £1800 last summer with a £100 3 year warranty in that and I think my spec would be £1600 or less now. Also the 17 inch is rather big so if you need to be carrying it around a lot probably go for the 15incher.
Hope this helped

Thanks basher77, my main query when spec any of the laptops suited to modelling is whether the GPU has to have open GL? Would save money buy putting in the GTX cards

Iirc CAD software runs via CPU, but for rendering a GPU is used. Not sure if this has changed recently.

I honestly can't see how it could be any worse.

Check to see what other configurations people use for the CAD software you use, some might be using normal GTX cards.
