New 14" Lafite Build thoughts please

Hey all,

So, my current Lafite 2 has gone to laptop heaven. I'm looking at getting a new laptop running Ubuntu 20.10.
Ignore the SSD for now. I have one 1TB SSD and my 500Gb SSHD from my old Latife. Is there space for that on this chassis? I don't need the 128Gb so will swap that out.

Ideally, I would like PCSpecialist to fit both SSD and the SSHD as I don't want to open my new build up right away. Laptops are too fragile for me.

Anyway, is the spec good? I was considering a i5, as I will just be doing emails, creating documents and web browsing really. Could I get away with a i5?

Thank you,

Not sure if there have been changes to the Lafitte chassis, be worth checking your drives will fit the new one. Not positive but do not think PCS will fit drives for you.

Something I have noticed with Ubuntu 20.10 is that it runs better with the X.org driver, before it was usually the nvidia one.

Thank you for the prompt response all.

Thanks for the info on drivers Stephen.

I meant M.2 from my old laptop not SSD.
I thought about the Fusion IV and the spec seems better then what I can get with the lafite

Thank you very much. Never knew these existed. I’ll see if I can find one that fits my SSHD

I’m aiming to order the Fusion IV tonight

Amazon have a varied stock but if you see a good one check around as prices vary.

I have a fairly bulky one which can take different sizes of HDD and SSD, it is portable but prefer it to keep on the desk.

There are some good m2 caddies as well. Not sure I would normally buy one of those but was given a 1 TB m2 and had nownere to fit it at time, so now have a portable film collection which is a tad easiet to travel with than a box of Blu Rays.

I'll be looking around Stephen. Thank for the contribution.

Have you any experience with the Fusion IV? I've searched and seen a few reviews on the forum.

Not the Fusion. Either for myself or machines ordered for family and friends I have installed Linux on about eight machines and had no major problems, think they were all Clevo but would need to check to be sure.

I’m sure Linux will be fine on the Fusion IV

The spec is fine for Linux and what I need really. Just will be documents, web browsing, and possibly PhD work at some point down the line.

Thank you for your input

If you have time when you get it a review would be nice, plus we can update the Linux compatibility thread.
