New desktop advice on build

Sorry, I don't know a huge amount about computers so apologise in advance. I've been trying to spec a PC for the last few weeks but seem to be getting nowhere and would be grateful for any advice

My budget is a bit limited - about £600 including monitor / keyboard/ mouse but could go a little higher if I needed to (probably absolute maximum of £700)

I don't intend using the computer for gaming, it will be general internet browsing, MS office etc but primarily video editing. A lot of capturing analogue video (from VHS) which obviously be in SD. I assume I'll have to find an external capture method using USB to do this (my old PC had composite and s video but I suspect these aren't an option nowadays)

I plan to do a certain amount of HD video editing but nothing really high definition and converting video to MKV files.

A certain amount of photo editing but again nothing too high definition. Probably using software such as adobe, davinci resolve, handbrake

It is possible I may start doing some sound recording and mixing but this is not a high priority. If I do then hoping to use Protools or other similar multi-track software. If my old MBOX is compatible then Protools will be run in conjunction with this, otherwise I'll be looking at other recording/mixing options

Unlikely to do any gaming, any games will likely to be older games not needing a great deal of processing power

I'll need a monitor but am probably looking at something like the AOC 21.5 E2270SWDN Also mouse, keyboard and DVD drive

Not looking at overclocking

Have a large number of external hard drives but looking at various builds it seems all systems have a reasonable number of USB slots so this shouldn't be a problem

will be processing video and capturing quite a lot so a fair amount of internal storage, although a lot will be moved off to external drives on a regular basis.

Sorry again for my total lack of knowledge on this and am grateful for any guidance anyone can give me

Many thanks

Gary

£600 is more or less out of the question. In that while you could buy a PC that would run the software, the experience would be terrible.

Video editing and various other things you've listed are quite demanding, benefiting from a decent CPU, probably GPU, RAM, and SSD storage. These things can be expensive.

And from your £600 you also need a monitor, a Windows licence, a case, PSU, motherboard, etc i.e. things you need for the computer to just exist, never mind the parts that affect performance.

This cuts quite a lot of corners, though should provide scope for upgrades:

The case and PSU will support a decent GPU.

The R5 2600x is a decent CPU for your uses, but the motherboard supports even better ones if you decide you want to pop an R7 3700x in there or something. It might even support the refresh everyone's expecting a little down the line. The R5 2600x is currently so cheap that that's actually not too bad from a value point of view (buying one and then replacing when CPU prices are better, if you need more horsepower)

Only 8gb RAM. You'll end up wanting to upgrade that to 16gb, or even 32gb, probably faster RAM.
Assuming RAM prices fall a little more, you'll still take a little loss buying a 2x8gb 3000MHz kit to upgrade versus buying that now, but not disastrous.

SSD blows by SSD standards, but at least it's an SSD, and you can upgrade storage fine.

GT 1030 isn't terribly good, but at least you can upgrade it if you find yourself using the GPU for encoding a lot. Maybe when a new Gen of GPU has come out and pushed price vs performance down a bit.

Hi,

Thanks so much for your help, will have a good look at this tomorrow and make a decision as to whether I can afford to spend a little more now. Thank you as well for your guidance on what might be best to upgrade now (if I can) and what can potentially wait.

Cheers

Gary

if I can stretch to another hundred, what would you suggest (i could do with internal storage 1TB should be fine, CD/DVD drive, wireless internet as my PC will be quite a way from the router) I assume the main thing would be 16gb RAM?

Many thanks again for your help

Are you going to use the GPU for video editing? e.g. with software like Adobe Premiere?

Or might you use the GPU for transcoding video via handbrake or similar?

Primarily video editing using premier or i may possibly look at davinci resolve, but I probably will be using handbrake at times. I don't care so much if transcoding takes time.

Cheers

Gary

Initially most of the editing will be ex VHS and will be in standard definition. There will be a certain amount of DVD / HD work but I dont intend being overly creative, maybe a little picture correction but nothing major

I have one further question if that's ok. If you think it would be wise to look at higher RAM (say 16 gig), would I be able to add a further 16 gig if necessary at a later date?

Hi Gary,

when you look at images of your motherboard, you can see that it has four DIMM slots. So it can handle 4 sticks, but not more. It is strongly recommended to always go with exactly the same model and size of RAM, for example: If you buy it with the 8GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 2666MHz (2 x 4GB) quoted above, you can later on buy another set of 8GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 2666MHz (2 x 4GB). This way you double up the RAM in total. If you buy 1 stick of 8GB now, you can potentially put 3 more sticks in there.

That's great, thanks for your help. I think i'll see if i can afford 16gb now and then a further 16GB when I can afford it as it looks like long term I should be thinking of 32 GB minimum if i start doing higher quality video editing.

Thanks again for your reply

Gary

This is what I'm considering. I've added the cheapest wireless card which I assume will be ok for general internet browsing.

I've upgraded to 16gb RAM with an option to add another 16gb at a later date when I have a bit more cash.

I think my main query now is about the internal storage. I've added a 1TB drive which should be big enough bearing in mind I use a lot of external drives but any comments on this would be gratefully received.

The other thing is that it recommended I went for for a 350W power supply which obviously would be a bit cheaper but would this be a good idea if at a later date I add extra RAM and possible upgrade a couple of other things suggested earlier? Sorry for all the questions but I'm a complete novice when it comes to the technical side and am anxious to make sure I get everything right before I order

AMD Ryzen CPUs can benefit a good deal from faster RAM. I'd spend the extra £6 for 2933MHz.

Consider shopping around for a monitor in case you can get a 24" one for a similar price (~£80 elsewhere).

The build generally seems sound, bearing in mind the budget constraints.
