I have chosen the following for a new gaming system. Hope to be able to run most new game at 1440p.

Need this to last 5+ years. My current 5 year system is now struggling at 1080p. i7 3770 3.4GHz - 16GB(1666MHz) - GTX 970 4GB etc.,

My 3770k and GTX 970 are fine at 1080p. You could always manage settings more carefully.

Or just get a GTX 1080 for your current build to beef it up to 1440p gaming, together with an SSD.

In terms of the spec above I'd suggest going with the Ultima review spec: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/configure-review/238/ as it's about £1700's worth of hardware for a discounted £1479 price. It's similar to the build above. Cheaper mobo and no 500gb Sata SSD but the mobo will make no difference to gaming performance and you can buy and add your own SSD.

But unless you are playing some very CPU bound games on sub-optimal settings (e.g. FO4) there's probably not much benefit to going for the 8700k over your current CPU.

At 1440p you'll probably want to replace the GPU well within 5 years (probably true even if you bought a 1080 ti) if you're not happy with a 970 at 1080p.

I thought about updating my current pc, but it started as win 8, then win 10 via ms free offer, then creators update, it just feels so rubbish now. The power supply is only 350W so if I was to get a newer graphics card I would need a new power supply as well. The Ultima is very good so I may change my mind about my choice and buy one of those. I'll let you know.

Thank you Oussebon.
