I know there is a pending announcement for the 40 series of graphics cards by the end of the month but I am concerned about the power draw and have managed to secure a 3090 for £1100 to go into the below specced rig. I have split the drives as the cost is cheaper and I like to have separate drives anyway. Any thoughts?

I have a 32" Asus PG32UQ monitor and play at 4K resolution, I want to build an all round PC for editing / rendering video (occasionally) and gaming for which I like all the settings maxed out as much as possible.

You realise the 4070 is supposed to be roughly on par with the 3090ti?

So you could have paid £500 and got the same or more performance by just waiting a month or so.

It's really hard trying to explain to people how generational improvements work but hey, it's your money.

But I would still suggest holding off for the upcoming Ryzen cpu and all the other hardware releases.

Announcements are next week.

This is a 7 - 10 year investment and from what we're hearing you'll be getting 150% more performance on the CPU alone, about 170% on the GPU and around 200% on the SSD.

Many thanks for your reply. The only release 2022 from my understanding will be the 4090, the other cards will appear some time 2023, correct me if I'm wrong?
I'm also wondering what will the cost be for all the new stuff.... and if I'll be in with a shout of securing the parts at launch

Oct 2022 I'm hearing for the 4080, it was Sept but been pushed back. Think they want to sell the 4090s first haha.

I would definitely hold off though. Dropping £3500 on a PC to end up the equivalent of a £2000 PC in 2 months isn't good planning.

Good to have those questions but don't panic buy without knowing the answers.

People always assume new gens are going to cost the earth. The only time it happened was with the RTX2000s because they were a fundamental new platform of architecture for physical groahical compute hardware and decades of R&D had gone into it.

These will cost far less than the prices we've been used to over the pandemic, I guarantee. The process were seeing at the moment are the prices we should have been paying all the time, they're not good deals in any way.

Thanks both for your input, I will now hold off and see what's on the horizon, my only concern was the power draw given the energy prices and I also considered that if I don't buy now the pending October increase in the cap will put me off further and I would not have an upgrade at all. Even so, if I hadn't dropped in here for advise it could of been a disaster to which I thank you both again.
Just on another note? do these forums allow you to post a rig with a view to what price I should be selling it for on the 2nd hand market?

It's not something we can help with on this forum, best to check an open forum like Tom's hardware.

Taking into account the recent announcement from AMD ref 7000 series CPU's and the other new hardware coming out soon, I am still considering buying the above specification PC but hopefully get it cheaper as the new stuff comes available.

My question is, what would you think the best time to order the spec I want at the lowest price?

It's anyones guess to be honest.

There will be times where the prices will drop, but as the availability of the next gen gets sparse the prices will go up again.

The prices won't drop to make them worthwhile over the 7000 series, that's not how it works. You'll still pay far more for current version over 7000 series for performance per £ especially at this level.

I don't understand how people don't understand how generational updates work. Am I missing something?

Thanks for your input Spyder, I will see how it pans out when all the new stuff comes out ready for a new build, I was just thinking prices may drop just like the graphics cards have over the last few months.

In relation to your last comment, people like myself come to these forums for experienced advice from people like yourself who have the knowledge. We live all live and learn. Many thanks for your guidance.

Hi all, well after months of waiting I have finally ordered my new rig with the 4090 the last piece of the jigsaw.
Use for gaming at 4K with an Asus PG32UQ monitor and occasional video editing this will keep me going for a good few years yet.
Any thoughts or improvements?

I would really appreciate some thoughts or indeed tweaks while the build is in processing stage of the order so I have time to amend ? This is a serious build and I can't afford mistakes

I don't think you'll be in too much of a hurry as I don't think the 13 series is released until next week.

I wouldn't recommend an Intel build personally, I think AMD has more to offer. You may find that a lot of members are along the same train of thought, hence why not really getting much input on your build as it stands.

Your storage options are very extreme. Having the OS on a fast drive is great, but also bundling in nearly 2TB worth of storage space is asking for performance drop IMO. Other than that, I would add the Silver warranty for £5 to cover any issues for returns.

I'm by no means an expert so take this with a pinch of salt but..

- RAM looks quite low spec compared to the rest of the machine
- 4090 seems like overkill
- I can't quite work out why you have 2 x 2TB NVMe and 2 x 2TB SSDs, usually you'd have a 500GB NVMe drive for Windows then a second for games with a 3rd slower drive for storage.
- I don't know enough about the motherboard and CPU to comment but I think going AMD would be better than Intel at this point.
- upgrade your warranty for £5 extra too

I suspect you could spec a similar system for less money and see much the same performance. Hopefully one of the other guys here can spec something for you.

Note: it would be useful to add the specification URL so others can play about with the configuration.

Hi, thanks both for your input. I was going to go down the AMD route but decided on intel.
The storage drives split are actually a bit cheaper and I like the thought of having my video edits on one drive, games on another, random photo's music etc on another and the OS drive with any additional utility software but I agree yes, dropping the OS to 500gb and upping the other drives is something to consider. 4090 is for 4K gaming at 144Hz so I think for future more demanding titles I am pretty much set up. I will post the configurator

I'm considering swapping the MB to Maximus Hero Z790 and the RAM to Dominator 5600mhz, dropping the OS M.2 to 500gb and keeping the 2 x Firecuda 530's and dropping 1 QVO. Upgrade the warranty.
I know it seems vastly overkill but this is a one time opportunity to get a dream machine so I want the best I can get. Having looked around other posts I see the experts have a liking to AMD and if someone can convince me that AMD is better and cheaper I'll consider.
The above swaps add another £300 to the cost.

I don't think you'll save anything with AMD to be honest. It may even cost a bit more if you opt for the 7900X (which is where I would land for an all rounder).
