New laptop ordered..but

This is my second laptop from PCspecialist. I loved my first one but I had a burglary and they got my laptop, various phones and kindle etc.

What they didn't get was my software though, or so I thought.

It turns out they did get my Win 7 OS, as it seems that I have to order a new OS for the new laptop despite having the discs and security numbers from my first one.

Am I right about this? Does anyone have experience of MS transferring a license in a situation like this. It would save me nearly £80.

Sorry to hear you got robbed, that sucks. I would have thought if you have the discs and security numbers, my advice would be able to get in contact with Microsoft directly and I'm sure they would allow you to use your current Win 7. I don't have personal experience of this though, so I'm just speculating.

Out of interest, what makes you think "they did get my Win 7 OS"?

The Win7 OS's provided by PCS are always the OEM version which means it is tied to the machine with which it came, so given the laptop with the OS was taken, so was the OS given they are linked

However, as stated, give Microsoft a ring, if you tell them the details they may allow you to reuse the key on a different machine (no guarantees here, but a possibility) - anything like this will be done on an individual basis so calling them is the best way to find out.

If can't get it sorted through Microsoft then would insurance (am guessing claiming the home insurance) cover it? Effectively part of the value of the laptop? Very easy to prove the market value if bought new for windows. Might be worth a look?

Assuming of course it's covered and you're claiming the the rest etc.
