New laptop queries

Hi,
I received my new Optimus Pro on Friday and most things seem to be fine. All I've really done is the basics and install Steam, played Factorio and ran 3DMark.

A few issues have crept up which hopefully someone can answer.

1. The keyboard back-light only would work in colourful mode until I rebooted a few times, that works OK now, but the onscreen key instructions (press X to record etc) keep popping up each time I play a game even though I've turned that off I the gaming centre.
2. I've had one BSOD with a Video TDR Failure, Factorio was on at the time, but I hadn't touched the laptop for about 10 minutes previously. Would updating video drivers be a good idea? If so which ones should I get (RTX 2060), just go to nVidia site or a specific PCS one?
3. I installed HWMonitor as I'm a bit obsessed by temperatures, but the values from that seem to differ from what the gaming centre shows (a few degrees). HWMonitor showed my CPU hit 81C at one point, but that seems a bit high considering the fans never went full whack like they did during 3DMark. Is there a way to see temperatures over a time period as its much more useful to see this data over time rather than just extremes.

If you post the full specs from your order page it will give the guys a better idea of what they are working with to help get you sorted.

With regards to the graphic drivers, get them from the Nvidia site, the ones on PCS won't be up to date

Well I tried to figure out which driver to use and I have quite a bit of conflicting information.

According to windows device manager I have is 26.21.14.4280 with a date of 23/03/2020.
According to GeForce Experience (which I installed) I have the latest version of 442.80 with a date of 17/08/2020.
According to Nvidia website if I search for 20 series (notebook) and then choose RTX 2060, there is a version of 457.09 with a date of 29/10/2020.

So what do I actually have and what should I get?! This seems much more contradicting than it should be!

What do you have according to nvida control panel?

Personally i would download and install that 457.09 as that is clearly the latest driver

Thanks, NVidia Control Panel says 442.80 too. I try the later drivers.

One other thing I've noticed after playing around is that the CPU seems to get 'very' hot from what I was expecting. I tried playing Anno 1800 on and off for the past hour varying several settings:
Gaming Centre: Gaming mode or Office mode.
Preset High Graphics options or everything lowered by a notch.
Using NVidia Control Panel to limit FPS to 60 or not.

Using HWMonitor my CPU has always hit into the 80s after a 10 minute test period, the highest (first attempt before above option modifications) hit 88C and the fans started hitting the highest speed (I think).

Does this seem right? I thought the 4800H was meant to run quite cool in comparison to equivalent Intel CPUs, but 80C seems pretty high! I'm just concerned there might be some issues with the cooling in my laptop.

High 80's is about right. An intel equivalent would be mid 90's!

Hi,

I've had my new laptop for about a week now and I have twice got this BSOD (both times while playing Factorio). I've updated my NVidia drivers (457.09) after the first instance of the BSOD, but it has just happened again.

I've tried researching the error online, but a lot of the information is several years old and there are very few solutions and none which seem relevant to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you order with windows or install your own?

If you can upload your dump files:

Latest one from here: C:\Windows\Minidump
And this one: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP

I *think* this is the correct link for the dump files. I added them to OneDrive (which I haven't used before tbh!)

So from a first preliminary it does appear to be related to display drivers.

Firstly can you uninstall any nvidia control panel and GeForce experience

Then can you try uninstalling your current drivers with DDU:

Then the system will reboot, and then install this driver:

Once that's done can you go into device manager and just upload a screenshot of the devices?

I've done as you suggested, however I'm not sure what information you wanted from the device manager, so I assumed it would be the GPU details. If you want any more information, please let me know and thank you very much for helping me out with this issue!

It was just to verify there are no unknown devices.

Just to double check, when you've applied windows updates, have you kept pressing "check for updates" until no more are coming through?

The BSOD Doctor
Sorry for my tardy response, we're two hours ahead of the UK here - and we had an early night!

The 110720-8640-01.dmp minidump is a VIDEO_TDR_FAILTRE (TDR is Timeout Detection and Recovery). The failing river is nvlddmkm.sys, which is the Nvidia graphics driver. The stack trace shows that the failure was in the DirectX Graphics kernel component (dxgkrnl) of the Nvidia driver, immediately before the bug check is an dxgkrnl!ADAPTER_RENDER::Reset+0x174 call. This makes me wonder whether this is a hardware (graphics card) issue? It would seem the DirectX graphics kernel (in the Nvidia driver) was trying to reset some (graphics?) adapter??

The 111220-10203-01.dmp minidump is exactly the same. Same stop code, same driver, same dxgkrnl in the stack trace, and there's also a dxgkrnl!ADAPTER_RENDER::Reset+0x174 in the stack trace immediately prior to the bug check. This is a duplicate of the above problem and cause.

The Memory.dmp kernel dump is also exactly the same. Same stop code, same driver, same dxgkrnl in the stack trace, and there's also a dxgkrnl!ADAPTER_RENDER::Reset+0x174 in the stack trace immediately prior to the bug check. In this dump (because it contains the kernel) I can also see a failure to load atikmpag.sys - which is a component of the graphics driver (on ATI cards I'd have thought???). This points more strongly at this being a driver error rather than a graphics card error.

As well as ensuring you have the latest Nvidia driver installed (as @SpyderTracks has suggested) I would visit the Clevo download site and see whether there is an updated chipset driver for your model of laptop. If that doesn't help then I'd suggest a fully clean reinstall of Windows, allowing Windows Update to install all drivers, and follow that with the install of the very latest Nvidia driver. From then on try to avoid installing any software you don't absolutely need to test it. If it BSODs in that state then it's almost certainly a hardware issue (almost certainly the GPU).

Thanks very for all of you help so far @SpyderTracks @ubuysa

@SpyderTracks Yes, all windows updates have been done, I checked several times yesterday.

I have a few follow up questions if you don't mind answering:
- Where can I find the type of chipset that I have so I can see if there are any drivers for it? I can't seem to find it in my spec list which I posted earlier.
- When it comes to reinstalling Windows do I just need to USB that PCS supplied me with and follow the instructions in the booklet that came with my laptop? I haven't done a reinstall of Windows since Vista!
- When you say let windows install all the drivers, should I then try and install the ones from the PCS website?

My plan is:
- Update the chipset drivers (if possible)
- Keep using the laptop to see if it BSODs again
- If it does then I'll reinstall windows as you described above, plus Steam, plus Factorio
- Then keep using the laptop for a while and see if it BSODs again
- If it does... cry?!

Thanks
