New Laptop

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade from my octane with I7 6700k and 1080. I've recently changed jobs and I now want something smaller lighter and at least competitive performance wise with what I've got.

This will be my personal laptop and mainly used for gaming.

I would lower the cpu to the 3700x, thermally and performance wise for gaming, you’re not going to see any difference. Even the 3700x is overpowered for gaming.

I would personally get the Samsung for the M2, just better performance

Definitely want better paste if it’s available.

otherwise it’s sweet!

Read a few reviews so far.

I want similar power to what I've got currently but I want to be able to move it if needs be. Not very mobile maybe bagged once a day and transported between sites.

Current laptop chassis is 4kg

I'll repaste it myself with Kryonaut.

The 3700x is substantially more powerful than your current processor.

Decided to order better storage options than in my previous spec. Only got basic ram as I'm intending to put 2x8gb 2666mhz. Anyone know if the machine will take any higher?

Also what sort of improvement can I expect from a 2070 over my existing 1080? I've been impressed with this 1080 card especially in a 4yr old octane III

Read a lot of reviews and I'm hoping for a similar powered machine in a smaller package. Heard the power consumption from both the 3700x and the 2070 being considerably lower means much better cooling.

Anything found as a possible drawback to this setup? I will admit I'm looking forward to being able to move this laptop without assistance lol.

If you’re looking for a performance improvement in the GPU, the bottleneck on both your old and new will be the monitor pretty much. TBH if you’re looking for better performance, I would hold off until the 3000 series laptops are released possibly in March. Overall I don’t think you’ll see much of a difference between them for gaming.

The screen is 144hz on this machine on my Octane its 60hz

Aside from the more powerful cpu I'm not sure I'm going to get much improvement for gaming. Obviously better screen and faster RAM but I think performance wise the 2070 isn't going to be a big enough improvement. My current octane hasn't struggled in 4 years with anything I've thrown at it. However as I said earlier my needs are more geared towards gaming whereas previously there were work based.

I don't mind a DTR as the laptop won't be needed to be ultra portable and running on battery etc. It'll go from home to work, table to desk. Just be nice to fit it in a laptop bag and not dislocate my shoulder lifting it :)

Any reports on how much improvement there will be in the 3 series? I know the desktop cards are out now but can we expect -20/-15% reduction for mobile versions?

@SpyderTracks has given you some top advice here mate I wouldn't be considering replacing your current laptop right now. Definitely wait for the 3000 series laptops.

I have no idea what the performance gains will be, what I do know is that the performance increase you will see switching between those laptops would not be worth the money. IMHO.

We've had no clues as yet, but there's one major factor to consider:

Firstly: 3000 series desktop cards are power mad, looking at 320W for the 3080 and 220W for the 3070 JUST for the GPU itself, I'm not sure how that's going to translate into the mobile space. But they'd have to lower power output SIGNIFICANTLY to make it viable on a mobile. My guess is they'll revert to having actual different chips in the laptop space, although obviously this is complete guesswork at this stage.

Secondly: Ray Tracing support is much better, and actually makes it viable, certainly at 1080p. This would be the shift I'd be looking for coming from your GTX1080

Thirdly: Expect better AMD mobile support in CPU space which will only be a good thing, better thermals, better performance and better battery life.

Normally, we'd be looking around a 6 month gap between the main release of the desktop cards and the mobile variants starting to appear, they're normally announced at CES in January for release around March.

I would personally always recommend a DTR if battery life isn't so much of a concern. I've taken my DTR (which is a serious brick, it's huge) all over the world on planes and trains, it hasn't prevented me from travelling with it. And the newer models, whilst being full DTR's are SIGNIFICANTLY slimmer and lighter than the ones that came even a few years ago. The Nova is actually a very impressively small chassis given it's power.

Yeah I appreciate the advice given always been helpful on forums as this would be my 4th laptop from PCS.

Only an idiot would ask for advice then not take it.

All valid points however.

I'd seen that the 3000 series desktop cards were requiring ridiculous amounts of power. I agree how much will be lost in the pursuit to make them into mobile versions.

I fully agree with you on DTR however I've honestly had my fill of trying to even just lift this monstrosity. It is however really durable and has served me faithfully.

I think you're completely right if I'm looking to replace I need to be getting a worthwhile upgrade from my current laptop rather than just moderate increases that don't justify the price involved.
