New PC - Instructions for installing OS

Hi from France,
My new PC just arrived - Knockout! Superfast.
It has a temporary copy of Windows 11 Home installed for testing, but I want to install W11 Pro. I have a USB stick ready to go.

The screen announcement says refer to PCSpecialist/FAQ for instructions on how to (presumably) delete or overwrite the installed system but I can't find anything appropriate there.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

Don't want to make any mistakes so advice urgently sought please!

Best

Alec

Download a new copy of Windows using the Media Creation Tool (Second option on linked page) to an 8GB (min) USB.
Boot that USB and choose a Custom Install.
Delete all UEFI partitions on the system drive (EFI System, Recovery, MSR Reserved, Primary).
Select the unallocated space that results and click the Next button. The installer will create the correct partitions and install Windows.
Run Windows Update repeatedly, even across reboots, until no more updates are found.
You may need/want to download and install the latest graphics driver from the Nvidia/AMD website (they change so regularly the latest version isn't always in the Windows libraries).

This is also worth a watch

You don't need any approval to clean install, the only area that you do is when updating the BIOS, you need their approval for that to retain warranty. Reason being is that an incorrect BIOS flash or power loss during the upgrade can brick the entire machine, so PCS can guide you through it if needed or give you the go ahead and it protects you should the worst happen.

But a clean install can't damage anything even if done incorrectly, so go for it.

You'll need to install the latest drivers for your GPU, all other drivers should be sorted once you've installed ALL windows updates (That includes OPTIONAL updates)

My personal advice regarding drivers would be to run Windows Update (even across reboots) until no more updates are found. That should install all the drivers you need. You may want to download and manually install the latest graphics driver from the Nvidia website, these change very often and the latest version often isn't included in Windows Update for a day or three.

Regarding optional updates, my advice is to not install them unless you know you need them. These drivers are provided by vendors because some users may require them, but they're not universally applicable. I would suggest seeing how the system behaves having run Windows Update. If you think you're having problems then post back here explaining what problems you're having, and post a screenshot of your optional updates page so we know what drivers you have available. We can then advise on which one(s) you may need to install.

Going forward DO NOT...
  • Install any driver search and install tools
  • Install any tune-up tools
  • Install a third-party security product. Windows Firewall and Windows Defender are all you need
  • Run any kind of registry cleaner
  • Blindly follow advice you find on the Internet - always ask here first!
