My current laptop just isn't cutting it any more now I've started editing videos. I put this quote together for a switch to PC, and I'll connect it via HDMI to a TV screen. Any good?

It's on a redundant platform that is significantly outperformed by modern processors, but also an AMD build would smash anything intel have to offer.

What's your max budget?

What are the other uses?

What monitor are you pairing it with, what resolution and refresh rate or make and model if you're unsure?

Thanks, I;m happy to change components certainly. Max budget is about £1300, this comes in just under. Other uses are much less intensive, general browsing, digital music playing, a bit of graphic design but nothing major. It really is the video editing that kills my laptop at the moment.

Monitor to be decided, but was expecting to go with an HD TV screen. I currently use a 23 inch TV on 1920x1080 at 59 Hz, hoping to move up to a 32 inch with a resulting increase in resolution but I don't know what to yet.

Coolies, we can definitely do better in that budget, give me a sec and I'll draw something up.

What are you going to do with your old laptop? If you're getting rid of it, you can legitimately transfer the windows license over to the new build which would be worthwhile?

I like to have some portability so will likely keep my laptop and use that for general "browsing while watching telly" kind of things. Thanks for the suggestion though!

That's awesome thank you! I've not had SSD before, presumably the trick is to have things that need accessing more quickly on the SSD and save the traditional hard drive for the less important, less frequently accessed stuff? What is the benefit of the 2nd SSD drive included in this quote, would I need that?

Ah, sorry, meant to put in a comment about the storage to explain it:

M2 drive is the primary drive for OS and programs, it's the new M2 format which means seriously improved speeds as you can see by the numbers

1st Drive is HDD for storage and project files.

2nd Drive is a smaller SSD to be used as a scratch drive which will offload any texures and stuff that doesn't have room in the RAM, this greatly improves overall render times in both editing and graphic design, they're not very expensive either, massive benefit to the workload. This needs to be configured in whatever software you use, but it's very easy.

So I typed in your 2nd (more balanced suggestion) and then took it from there (I may still go with that exact config). I tried tweaking a couple of things, the main one I recall being the M2 SSD drive, and it also recommended me to reduce the wattage of the power supply as it said I had too much, and I ended up with this, which seemed a decent saving. Would you have any concerns with this set up (It helps with my budget to also be able to upgrade to a 32 inch TV)

Just chiming in on Spyder's excellent comments. I'm starting to research my own editing build too.

A couple of things you may wish to consider that I am also thinking of:

- I would definitely go for an AMD build (you are already and I can't believe I'm saying that as I wouldn't have looked twice at AMD a few years back).
- Don't bother with mechanical disks anymore - just whack a combo of SSD & NVMe and have at least three of them (applications, media & scratch), whatever combo you think you can afford. In my view, 3 x SSD is better than 1 x NVMe and 2 x HDD, for example. I would sacrifice storage for speed.
- Use external HDD's for storage of projects you are no longer working on. These are relatively cheap these days.
- Match your RAM to the supported speed by the CPU for best performance, so for the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X would go with 3200Mhz RAM

Obviously those are all budget dependent. I mostly use Premiere Pro and I have based my research around this, other applications may require tweaks.

I think the main thing I'm wondering now is whether the 256GB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD is fine for the additional storage option, if it's for the operating system then is there a specific reason I'd need to have 512GB rather than 256GB or is it about the speed at which it reads?

On most machines, you'll find 250Gb to be quite restrictive these days when you factor in online storage drives, updates, programs, working files etc. When I used to have 250Gb a couple of years ago, I had to keep deleting things to free up space, it's much better to have too much storage than not enough.

Regarding the PSU, you need the extra for headroom to allow for future upgrades, plus you want the TXm series as the absolute minimum on this level of build. It's just much better made, leads to greater stability of the system, better thermals in the case because it's semi modular, and it runs quieter too. There's no harm in having a higher rated PSU, the PC will only use what it needs and it gives headroom to prevent the PSU being maxxed out 100%

Thanks, that makes sense! OK I'll post what it's configured to at the moment (which I think should be bang on what you suggested). If you'd be good enough to just give it your thumbs up or down I'm probably about ready to order!
