No idea what gaming PC to buy for teen son

Harriet

New member
I want to buy my teen son a gaming PC desktop (not laptop) and have no idea where to start. He likes Fortnite and Minecraft and making stuff for YouTube, but he has no idea of spec.

Budget up to £750 for the desktop - we will need all the other stuff too but I LITERALLY have no idea of what to get.

Please can anyone advise?

Thank you

Hi Harriet, with a budget like that you are best getting him a console, with the way prices are at the moment, you'1 probably talking twice that for a reasonable entry level system

OK thanks. The man in Currys said we'd be able to get something for £700 (minus monitor etc which I would pay for separately). Is that unrealistic?

Sorry one more qu, if you have the time. What is the cheapest (least expensive) desktop you would recommend?

The trouble with those curry's pc's is they might have a couple of fairly good parts in them to highlight on the advert to pull you in, but the rest is what they can get away with to make the system run, and they might last a couple of years before needing replacement.

The systems we spec on here we're looking at maybe 7-10 years lifespan with a couple of upgrades along the way, which although a bit more costly to start out with actually works out cheaper in the long run.

We could probably spec a system for about £1200, you would then need monitor etc on top of this

Ok i've just put this together, and is the minimum i would recommend, its got a good base that in a few years time he could upgrade

Now we could absolutely cut costs with something like this but the GPU would need upgrading fairly soon. It's an entry level 1080p GPU

As @Martinr36 has said, it's a crazy time for GPU pricing right now so you don't get particular value for money. If the budget can be stretched to accommodate the above then there's no doubt it would serve our Son very well.

I've managed to shave some of the luxury corners to get the price down a bit but just keep in mind that it won't be quite to the same standard as above. My main reasoning is that the games you mention, Fortnight and Minecraft, can be run with far less GPU demand when not turning on silly options (Ray Tracing etc). With that in mind the 1050Ti would do the job nicely. I've also had to remove the fast storage drive and replace it with conventional. This means that when installing larger games, they would need to go onto the conventional drive and load times will be quite a bit longer.

You can see I'm also nowhere near the original budget limit. It's just the price of a PC nowadays unfortunately. An XBox or PS5 would absolutely trounce both of these systems for performance. Something to keep in mind if the PC route is definitely one that you want to go down.

There is an alternate way that this could be done for cheaper.

Recently AMD released their line of APU CPU's- this effectively means that there's a graphics card in the CPU, (graphics cards are the component driving up prices at the moment). Although the performance they give isn't amazing, the games you've mentioned aren't all that demanding so the graphics would definetly give you a playable experience for the time being. Once the GPU market settles, you'd be able to buy and put in a GPU which would give a much better gaming experience and perhaps an incentive for your son to save his pocket/ christmas/ birthday money to buy one for himself?

This would likely end up being more expensive in the long run, but it'll have a smaller buy in for yourself and likely have more performance than the 1050TI and 1660 cards that have been recommended above once the new card is put in

Aside from that, the build is vastly similar to the ones that have already been recommended. If you'd like a more in-depth description, feel free to let me know!

Good call there @JUNI0R , I keep forgetting about the 5600G when doing budget builds that aren't demanding

This is definitely your best option, the 5600g will perform amazingly for the games you mentioned. Id 100% go with this
