Noob having trouble with download speeds

Just taken delivery of our new gaming pc which shipped with WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD. The pc is about 4 ft from the router, exactly the same position our old pc was in. Our download speed is currently 1.1mbs and it’s impossible to play anything that moves without major lag. I tried to download GTA and have had to give up after 4 hours. What can I do? Ethernet connection is not an option. Our old pc was also wireless, was a basic spec but could still cope with most decent games. Help?

Hey Anna, you've said ethernet isn't an option - and I might be teaching you to suck eggs - but personally I avoid Wi-fi at all costs and where direct access to ethernet is an issue, I usually use powerline adapters. I'm not sure if this is something you're aware of, but if Martin can't help troubleshoot the issue - it could be an idea.

Here's a link to what it is i'm talking about if you aren't aware:

Obviously that doesn't help you being essentially unable to use your perfectly good WiFi but I thought i'd let you know about them anyway :)

Have you screwed in your antennae?

But if you're only 4ft from the router, why is an ethernet cable not a solution in the short term?
There are 2 antennae at the back of the pc, I don’t think they unscrew? The router is 4ft away but downstairs. I can’t run an Ethernet through the floor. The locations haven’t been an issue with our old pc which was a far inferior spec but had excellent wifi speeds

Can you please post the full spec from your orders page

Wireless Network Card
WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD
What was the wireless network card in the old PC, I'd highly recommend changing that card to the AX200, can you check that the card is properly seated, also please post a screenshot of your windows update page, including the optional updates page

You would have had to screw the antennae on yourself when you got the PC, so I’m wondering are you looking at something else.

When you fisrt started it, and after going through the initial setup, did you run Windows Update until no more updates were found? Did you then look under 'View optional updates' to see whether there were any driver updates available - especially for your wireless card?

Thanks. I have now run all the updates and most of the optional ones. I couldn’t see any for the wireless card specifically but the speed has increased to 6mbs….not great, it’s taken 7 hours to download GTA… but it seems fast enough for the games to actually function!

I would consider ditching that card and upgrading to the AX200. I think that card needs to be dropped from the configurator. Customers only save £10 going for it after all. That £10 spent would save a ton of headaches for all involved.

Yep recommended that several posts back, seems to have fallen on deaf ears

To be fair, most people are not going to turn around and splash more cash until they’ve exhausted all options

I did see that, and agreed of course, though at that stage in the thread I didn't think we were quite at the 'change the hardware' stage, and there were still things that could be done to improve the performance of the card they had. Even though 'change the hardware' might be the wisest course of action, I think we need to help users make the best of what they have, at least in the first instance.
